1 Physics - Measurement

2 By the end of today’s class you should be able to:
Tell what distance means Know what distance is measured in Measure the length of short and longer distances Describe how to use a trundle wheel, an opisometer and a vernier calipers

3 Opisometer An opisometer is used to measure the length of a small curvy line. It is often used to measure the length of roads or rivers on a map

4 Trundle wheel A trundle wheel is a larger version of the opisometer
It is used to measure the length of longer distances - like the length of a road.

5 Vernier Callipers A vernier callipers is used to measure the diameter of circular objects – like the diameter of a marble

6 Can you? Define area Tell what area is measured in
Know how to measure the area or a regular shape like a rectangle? Know how to measure the area or a regular shape like a leaf?

7 Area Area is the amount of surface that something covers.
The standard international unit for measuring area is m2 or cm2

8 Measuring the area of a rectangle
Each box is takes up an area of 1m2. How much area does this whole pitch take up?

9 You can multiply the length by the breadth!
The length is 10 metres Breadth is 5 metres Can you think of a way to get the same answer for the area without counting the boxes? You can multiply the length by the breadth! 10 m x 5 m = 50 m2

10 Finding the area of a rectangle
The area of a rectangle = Length x Width 4 metres 2 metres Area = 4m x 2m = 8m2

11 Today’s objectives In today’s class you should learn about:
What volume is The units volume is measured in How to measure the volume of a regular solid How to measure the volume of an irregular solid

12 Volume Volume is the amount of space something takes up
It is measured in cm3 or m3

13 Measuring the volume of a rectangular block
Length x Width x Height Example – Find the volume of the box 12cm x 4cm x 3cm = 144cm3

14 Volume of a liquid The volume of a liquid is measured using..
A graduated cylinder or A burette

15 How to measure volumes of liquids

16 Can you.. Tell what length is Tell what area is
Explain how to measure the area of a rectangle Tell what volume means Describe how to measure the volume of a rectangular block? Tell how to measure the volume of a liquid?

17 Measuring the volume of an irregular solid
The volume of the stone is 2cm3

18

19 Measuring the volume of a LARGE irregular solid
Use an overflow can !!!

20 Mass Mass is the amount of matter in something ( stuff )
It is measured in grams (g) Mass is measured using a mass balance

21 Temperature Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is.
It is measured in degrees Celsius OC It is measured using a thermometer

22 Time Time is measured in seconds (s)
It can be measured using a stopwatch
