2 4 Phases of Alcohol Dependency
Tolerance: Being able to drink more alcohol before experiencing ill effects – heavy social drinker Memory Lapses: related to event occurring during drinking episodes. Loss or lack of control over Alcohol: The drinker can no longer be certain of discontinuing use when he/she wants to. Prolonged Binges of intoxication: the drinker suffers observable mental and physical complications.

3 Symptoms & Effects of Alcohol Dependence
BEHAVIORAL: Hiding Bottles, aggressive behavior, personality changes, irritability, jealously, uncontrollable rage, selfishness. 2. PERSONAL SYMPTOMS: Nausea, Vomiting, Shaking in the morning, abdominal cramps, numbness, irregular pulse, delirium tremens.

Abstinence Use Misuse Abuse Dependency No alcohol use Social Acceptance Use harmful to self/others Planned/consistent misuse No control No affect on grades/health/ personal life Control over drinking Neg affect on academics/ health/personal life Preoccupied Compelled to drink Choose when/how much to drink Weekend excessive use May blackout Intoxication regularly Misuse on occasion Behavioral issue Alcohol must be present to have good time Blackouts occur Needs outside help to overcome
