Definitions
Theory of Machines:
branch of Engineering-science
deals with the study of relative motion between the various parts of a machine, and forces which act on them.
A machine:
a device which receives energy in some available form and utilizes it to do some particular type of work.

3. Sub-divisions of Theory of Machines (TOM)

Sub-divisions of Theory of Machines (TOM)
TOM may be sub-divided into the following four branches:
Kinematics. deals with the relative motion between various parts of the machines.
Dynamics. deals with forces and their effects, while acting upon the machine parts in motion.
Kinetics. deals with inertia forces which arise from the combined effect of mass and motion of the machine parts.
Statics. deals with forces and their effects while machine parts are at rest.
