2 CIVICS CIVICS IS: The study of government and the citizen’s who live under that government ECONOMICS: the branch of knowledge concerned with the production, consumption, and transfer of wealth.

5 What is a citizen? A person who lives under a government who has duties, responsibility, in loyalty In exchange, the government provides and protects citizens rights

6 DUTIES VS. RESPONSIBILITES
Is something you are required to do as a citizen RESPONSIBILITY Is something you should do, but aren’t required to do.

7 RIGHTS Benefits, protection, and entitlement you have as a citizen of a government SOCIAL CONTRACT- citizens fulfill certain obligations in exchange for freedoms.

8 Two Ways to become a Citizen of a Country
Birth You are a citizen of the country you are born in. Naturalization: The process of becoming a citizen.

9 14th Amendment-US Constitution
Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

10 ALIEN Any person who is not from this country
People can enter the country LEGALLY or ILLEGAL. If you are not a citizen of that country you are considered an ALIEN.

11 IMMIGRANT A person who moves to the U.S. with the intention of staying there and becoming a citizen. Not everyone who comes to the U.S. wants to stay, but those who are immigrating do intend on staying.

13 REFUGEE A person who leaves their country because of war, famine, drought or natural disaster. Many refugees intend on returning home after the crisis is over.
