1 Visual Hexagons Revision
Each hexagon relates to the one in the middle. Your first task is to describe what each hexagon shows and explain how it links to the middle hexagon. The second task is to extend yourself by explaining how each hexagon links to the others it is connected to on either side. Instructions: You will need scissors, glue and 2 different coloured pens or pencils. Cut out the hexagon as one whole shape. Stick the cut-out shape in the middle of a double page in your exercise book Add labels to the shape to describe what each hexagon shows and explain how it links to the middle hexagon (colour one). Add labels (colour two) to explain how each hexagon links to the other hexagons that it touches. Challenge: Make your own visual hexagon for another topic.

2 Strong winds can blow down pylons, causing wildfires.
The Santa Ana winds are very dry because they blow from the desert. They can fan the flames of wildfires as they rush down mountain slopes. Strong winds can blow down pylons, causing wildfires. If communities know about likely wind directions at certain times of year then this can help them to plan evacuation routes. Pylons can fall over, causing wildfires by giving out sparks. Having a community day to help people prepare for wildfires can reduce the damage that they cause. Military training and falling pylons are both ways in which sparks are released. If these set fire to dry vegetation, a wildfire might start. Backburning and community planning are linked because there might be community volunteers, trainied on the planning day, to help firefighters with backburning. Military training can cause wildfires because sparks from guns can set dry vegetation alight. Backburning can stop the spread of wildfire. Military training causes sparks to released, while spark arresters stop this. Backburning and spark arresters are both ways of reducing the damaging effects of wildfires, although spark arresters are a preventatibve measure whilst backburning is a response. Putting spark arresters on chimneys can reduce the likelihood of a wildfire because sparks won’t hit flammable materials such as trees, bushes or grass.
