1 I will create a model of an atom and identify the subatomic particles
Happy Tuesday August 21, 2018 1. Today’s Date What do we call elements in group 1? What do we call elements in group 7? What group and period is Oxygen in? 3. Journal #10 Atomic Structure Worksheet 4. Homework I will create a model of an atom and identify the subatomic particles 2. Objective

2 Quick Reminders Binder due Friday Quizzes for 50% of points
Notes Daily Assignments Tests Quizzes Vocab Quizzes for 50% of points Correct Daily assignments for full credit

3 Building Blocks of Matter
The fundamental building blocks of matter are atoms and molecules. These particles make up elements and compounds.

4 Atoms and Elements An atom is the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical identity of that element. An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler, stable substances and is made of one type of atom.

5 Nucleus Electron Cloud Protons- positively charged particles
Inside The Atom Nucleus Protons- positively charged particles Neutrons- neutrally charged particles Electron Cloud Electrons- negatively charged particles

6 Inside The Atom

7 Proton (positive) Neutron (neutral) Electron (negative
3 Subatomic Particles Proton (positive) Neutron (neutral) Electron (negative

8 Counting Atoms Atoms of the same element have the same number of protons The atomic number of an element is the number of protons of each atom of that element Let’s practice Li B Cu Mg F

9 Electrons If the atom is neutrally charged, the # of electrons equals the number of electrons. Let’s Practice H C O

10 Mass Number and Neutrons
The mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons that make up the nucleus of an isotope. Examples: Carbon 12, 14, 16 Hydrogen 1, 2, 3

11 Your Assignment (pink/red) Alkaline Earth Metals (orange)
Transition Elements (yellow) Metalloids (green) Halogens (blue) Noble Gases (purple)

12 Atomic structure worksheet
