1 Notes SPI Mass and Weight Science Learning Intention: Distinguish between mass and weight using appropriate measuring instruments and units. Purpose: to understand how mass and weight are different from each other. Success Criteria I will show that I understand this topic by earning a 90 or higher on the quiz. SPI Mass and Weight Notes Science Mass Key Questions What is it? How is it measured? How can I tell the difference between mass and weight? Mass: What is it? Mass is the amount of matter in an object. In other words it is how much "stuff" is in an object. Everything that is made of matter has mass. Anything that is solid, liquid, gas, or plasma has mass.

3 Mass: How is it measured?
We measure mass with a triple-beam balance or an electric balance (there are various kinds) We are measuring the amount of matter in the object This measurement does not change from planet to planet Unit of measure for mass: Grams Examples: milligrams (mg), grams (g), kilograms (kg) Triple-Beam Balance

Weight is the measure of gravity’s pull on an object. Weight = mass of the object times the acceleration of gravity F.Y.I.-formula for weight is W = M x G Everything made of matter can be affected by gravity. (This includes all solids, liquids, gases, & plasma).

Measure weight by using a scale (there are various kinds) We are actually measuring the force of gravity's pull This measurement changes from planet to planet Unit of measure for weight: Newtons (not pounds!)

7 Weight: How to Tell the Difference Between Mass & Weight
Weight changes from planet to planet, but mass does not Example: A full/unopened can of coke on Earth weighs 3.61 Newtons. The same unopened can on Mars would weigh 1.20 Newtons Why? Mar has less gravity than Earth. So there is less force pulling on the can on Mars than there is on Earth. Earth Mars Earth Mars 3.61 N 1.20 N
