Period 1

2 Template: Describe the structure and function of your "part" of the digestive system Add images to help your description of the system

3 Table 1: Mouth (Christian Payne, Grace Wartman)
The mouth is a very vital part of the digestive system, being the first part to process the product before it's transferred to other areas of the digestive tract. The mouth is the start of the digestive process, the saliva mixes with the products to begin the process of breaking it down so your body can absorb it and use it as protein and energy. Ingestion is the process of eating

4 Table 2: Esophagus (Nallely, Rosaura, Teresa)
Main important function is to carry any food swallowed to the stomach An alimentary canal or muscular tube 8 inches long and is line by mucosa tissue Lower esophageal sphincter prevents acid and stomach contents from going backwards from the stomach You can still live a relatively healthy life without an esophagus

5 Table 3: Liver (Xochitl Ortiz,John L'Heureux II, Cruz Hernandez,
Bile production and excretion Storage of glycogen, vitamins, and minerals. Produces cholesterol and certain important vitamins Produces clotting factors to help blood clots Metabolizes alcohol and many drugs

6 Table 4: Gallbladder (Jonathan corona, John Gonzalez, takashi tsutsui )
Small Shaped organ beneath the liver, bile is stored after the secretion by liver and before releases into the intestines. Its function is to store and concreate bile, an enzyme produced in the liver. It plays a very important role in the digestion of the food. the gallbladder servers as a reservoir for bile while its not being used for digestion Its behind the liver Its part of the biliary tract

7 Table 5: Pancreas (Samantha, Mariah & Pamela)
Pancreatic juice contains several enzymes including: amylases, proteases, and lipases The pancreas is located behind the stomach and surrounded by the spleen, liver & small intestine. Is long & flat & measures to about 6 inches Plays a major role in digestion & regulating blood sugar Makes enzymes to help digest proteins, fats & carbs Produces hormones (insulin & glucagon)

8 Table 6: Stomach (Juvenal Carrera, Justine Vazquez, Christian Martinez)
Partial digestion of the food takes place here. The churning action of the stomach muscles physically breaks down the food. The stomach releases acids and enzymes for the chemical breakdown of food. The enzyme pepsin is responsible for protein breakdown.

9 Table 7: Large Intestine Mr. Crew
Structure: "Colon (large intestine) The colon is a 6-foot long muscular tube that connects the small intestine to the rectum. The large intestine is made up of the cecum, the ascending (right) colon, the transverse (across) colon, the descending (left) colon, and the sigmoid colon, which connects to the rectum." Bibliography:2016. (1995). Digestive system function & organs. Retrieved September 15, 2016, from Function: It normally takes about 36 hours for stool to get through the colon. The stool itself is mostly food debris and bacteria. These bacteria perform several useful functions, such as synthesizing various vitamins, processing waste products and food particles, and protecting against harmful bacteria. When the descending colon becomes full of stool, or feces, it empties its contents into the rectum to begin the process of elimination.

10 Table 8: Small Intestine Mr. Crew
Structure: Made up of three segments — the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum — the small intestine is a 22-foot long muscular tube that breaks down food using enzymes released by the pancreas and bile from the liver. Function: The duodenum is largely responsible for the continuous breaking- down process, with the jejunum and ileum mainly responsible for absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream.
