1 COMMUNICATION Yesterday we talked about listening skills (recap)
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 COMMUNICATION Yesterday we talked about listening skills (recap) Hopefully you practiced some of these skills during yesterday’s presentations Today we’re going to discuss effective communication to build upon what was learned yesterday. Transition: Forms of Communication

2 Forms of Communication
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Forms of Communication Would someone give an example of a form of communication? White Board: Write them out in two columns – Verbal and Non verbal but do not label the columns until after listing e.g. demonstrating; scout sign, uniform, unit website, pledge of allegiance, codes of conduct etc. How about some in your scouting position? Transition: Examples of Communication

3 Examples Examples Gilwell Song
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Examples Examples Gilwell Song •The circle with a dot in it, on Baden-Powell’s gravestone (the trail symbol for “I have gone home.”) •BSA uniforms, patches, Wood Badge beads •Wood Badge icon (Axe and Log) •The Gilwell Gazette, including the agenda of the day These are all nonverbal forms of communication. Briefly discuss with the group what messages do they convey and what makes them effective (or not). Transition: Characteristics of Effective Communications

4 What Makes Communication Effective?
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 What Makes Communication Effective? Transition: Characteristics of Effective Communication speeches effective? What were some of the things that made those King Jr. giving speeches. President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther In the session on Living the Values, we saw videos of What Makes Communication Effective? [Let them ponder the question?] White Board list:

5 What Makes Communication Effective?
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 What Makes Communication Effective? Message is of importance. Vision presented could affect the listeners. Speakers established themselves as authorities in what they were talking about. Transition: Three more Characteristics of effective communication The speakers established themselves as authorities. They conveyed the sense that they knew what they were talking about. The messages presented visions that could affect the lives of the listeners. Word pictures! The messages were of importance.

6 What Makes Communication Effective?
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 What Makes Communication Effective? Speakers believed in what they were presenting. Speakers got to the point. Speakers used personal skills of speaking, body language, tone of voice, and charisma. Transition: What does this example convey to you? 6. The speakers used personal skills of speaking, body language, tone of voice, and charisma to get their points across. 5. The speakers got to the point. They did not waste the listeners’ time. 4. The speakers believed in what they were presenting.  ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY!  ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU; I have a dream!!!

7 Effective Communication
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Effective Communication First Aid Medical Emergency Form Who: Wood Badge patrol member What: Snake bite Where: Turner Campsite When: 15 minutes ago Why: We need assistance at the Health Lodge How: Call 911; request ambulance; notify health & safety personnel and Course Director Suppose a Scout has just run up to the group and delivered the following message. Pretend for the moment that this message is real. [White Board list:] What is its impact? Does it grab your attention, why? What are its strengths as a form of communication? Transition: These characteristics can be turned into a “Blueprint” that can be used to guide us in more effective communications

8 Basic Blueprint of Communication
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Basic Blueprint of Communication A Sender A Message A Receiver Transition: Do you agree that these parts apply to all forms of communications? (ball represents the message and the game has senders and receivers) That was more than 2,300 years ago, and it is still true today and applies to all forms of communication. How is the Zulu Toss game symbolic of Aristotle’s Theory? Aristotle broke down communication into three parts: Basic Blueprint of Communication A receiver A message A sender

9 Applies to All Forms of Communication
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Applies to All Forms of Communication Spoken Written Film Music even Pantomime All forms of communication have the three parts, however, the way it is delivered is different. Sometimes the message is clear and sometimes it is more subtle, buried and disguised. Some of these are powerful when put together. Transition: How might the “Listening to Learn” session apply to effective communication?

10 Effective Listening as a Communication Tool
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Effective Listening as a Communication Tool Begins with good listening Provides what listeners need Engages listeners minds Is a two-way process Good communication begins with good listening, by the receiver and the sender. In “Listening to Learn” we discussed that you pay attention to both the words of the message and more importantly how it is said. >Body language, Tone of voice, Emotions….< Effective Communication provides what listeners need in a manner that engages their minds. The sender must listen to the signals being sent out. In other words…Communication is a 2-way process. Both LISTENER AND SENDER have responsibilities. Transition: Let’s talk more specifically about effectively engaging the audience

11 Engaging the Audience Transition: What do you want? Who is you?
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Engaging the Audience Transition: What do you want? Who is you? Pre-printed or PowerPoint we’re pushing on. Usually there is a preconceived direction you want to go – you can feel locked in and push on. Has a speaker ever asked you that? As I state these for agreement, how do you feel? Included? Engaged? Uncomfortable? If something’s not working, let’s try to make it better “If it doesn’t’ seem to be working well, let me know. “I want this presentation to be a success”

12 What Do You Want? Transition: So, what do we want?
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 What Do You Want? Transition: So, what do we want? This is the most important question when preparing a presentation. The “You” however is not you, but the audience!

13 What Do You Want? We want: Knowledge Learn a skill
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 What Do You Want? We want: Knowledge Learn a skill Understand something Transition: We now know what we need, but what might be some barriers to effective communication? Has anyone been a telemarketer? Communication must be 2-way (figure out what they want-so you can give them what they need). We think we know what’s best and just forge ahead. A speaker may not actually verbalize the thought, but…they are more likely to adjust a presentation to fit the need We want… How much more unusual is it for kids to hear it? What do you want – unusual for adults to hear to understand something to learn a skill Knowledge

14 Barriers to Effective Communication
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Barriers to Effective Communication Lack of common ground Lack of sincerity Lack of authority Telemarketers – Love them, right? Why don’t we love them? What are the barriers to effective communication that a telemarketer must overcome? Lack of Common Ground. The telemarketer knows nothing about us and is aware of no shared interest except that we have a telephone and we probably have a credit card. Lack of Sincerity. Making “the deal” is their only concern. Do they ever ask how we might use their product? Or if we need it? Do they listen? Lack of authority. Usually can’t answer questions beyond the script and FAQs. Hired only to make the deal via the call. Transition: What other barriers can you think of?

15 Barriers to Effective Communication
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Barriers to Effective Communication Lack of clarity Poor presentation skills Lack of receptiveness Environment Clarity. Exaggerate, blur the truth, never mention weaknesses . Presentation skills. Can badger, argue or sound bored. Don’t let a word in edgewise.  Receptiveness. Our needs don’t seem to matter….”are you going to buy or not?”  Environment. They disrupt our personal or family time, often calling during the dinner hour. This intrusion into the home environment generally makes people less receptive to their message than if they were to receive that same message in the mail, for example. And yet even with all these drawbacks, telemarketing is successful often enough for many companies to invest millions of dollars in it. Just think how powerful communication can be when people take the time to overcome these barriers. Transition: So, how can ensure we embrace good principles and avoid barriers to effective communication?

16 Ways to Assure Good Communication
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Ways to Assure Good Communication Common Ground Sincerity Authority Clarity Transition: What are some other ways to ensure effective communication? Clarity. Be simple and straightforward. Plan your message, not just your PPT! Authority. A speaker should know what he is talking about or be willing to learn with the group. Be willing to be vulnerable Sincerity. A speaker must care about the message and the receiver. Common Ground. Who Me game – got to learn something about each other. Common experiences make communication easier. A Scout leader who knows nothing about constellations can bring a star chart along on a campout. He might say, “I’ve never used one of these before, but I’d sure like to learn. Let’s figure this out together.”

17 Ways to Assure Good Communication
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Ways to Assure Good Communication Good Presentation Skills Receptiveness Environment Good Presentation Skills. What are some good skills you’ve seen? What are some bad methods you’ve experienced? (e.g. Nervous habits, speak too quickly, no eye contact). The key is to plan and rehearse. Receptiveness. Read your audience. Can you tell if it’s working or not? Be willing to take feedback and adjust. (are they hungry, tired, bored, restless, right after lunch, ahhhh!!!!) Environment. What are things to watch for in the setting? (e.g. Temperature, distractions, lighting, seating arrangements etc.) Transition: How do good communication skills apply to teaching?

18 Effective Communication and the Teaching of Skills
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Effective Communication and the Teaching of Skills An important use of effective communication is the teaching of skills. Most have been called upon to teach something as a scout leader, right? Transition: Let’s talk about the Woggle-tying process!

19 Effective Communication and the Teaching of Skills
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Effective Communication and the Teaching of Skills Transition: So, how did the Woggle exercise stack up? Support and praise! Leader let participants work it, make mistakes, learn Leader demonstrated (Verbal, visual, Tactile) Handout was provided with diagrams Finished Woggle let you see the goal Points to prompt on: Hands On How could the process be improved? (Start, Stop, Continue) What was the process? (Depersonalizes the performance issues) On the White Board What worked best? Give me some feedback….

20 Good Teaching Make it hands-on.
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Good Teaching Make it hands-on. Set an achievable, understandable goal. Use a multimedia approach. handouts, visual aids, etc. Demonstrate the process. Let participants try it. Give support and praise. Transition: So, how did the Woggle exercise stack up?  Use a multimedia approach—handouts, visuals, etc. Good Teaching should achieve these goals:  Give support and praise.  Let participants try it.  Demonstrate the process.  Set an achievable, understandable goal.  Make it hands-on.

21 The Teaching EDGE is how we teach every skill
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 The Teaching EDGE is how we teach every skill Explain Demonstrate Guide Enable Transition: To summarize the principles of effective communication…. This EDGE model is a tool we’ll be seeing in other situations was well. We have an entire presentation on it tomorrow! 3. Guide others to do (Tactile/Hands-on) 1. Explain how (Verbal) Enable others to use the skill with opportunities to use it successfully (Support and Praise!) Demonstrate how (Visual)

22 Communication A tool of leadership Essential to effective teams
D CousinoTG Notes SR917 Communication A tool of leadership Essential to effective teams Happens in the “common ground” Should be clear and concise Sender/receiver consider each other Is written, verbal, and nonverbal Feedback is a gift Transition: Great Leaders are usually great…… Communication is:  effective if you believe that Feedback is a gift. is written, verbal, and nonverbal when the sender and receiver consider each other clear and concise Finding “common ground” is essential to effective teams a tool of leadership
