2 Morning Meeting - Christian
Today is March 15th We go to Music today for Activity. You have 30 seconds to greet one another around your desk. Important dates for next week: PARCC State Assessment starts TOMORROW!  Choose 3 people to share about something. After they have shared, choose 2 people to respond to the person sharing. Quote: Let’s all have a great day and be HAPPY! Take up snack money when you are done.

3 Observation vs. Inference
We will be focusing on non-fiction reading for the next few weeks. In order to help kids read deeper, they have to be able to infer. This is a review lesson on inference using picture books as well as a VERY short non-fiction piece of text. We start the lesson using a picture so kids can use their observation skills to make inferences.

4 R.I/L 1 R.L 2 R.I 2 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences. Determine a theme of a story including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text. Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text. Standards

5 Sample Schedule Idea Day 1-Define the difference between observation and inference-short mini-lesson with a picture. Day 2-Read Dr. Xargle and the Earthlets (in PPT) and do an inference lesson Day 3-Non-Fiction Practice with Inference Day 4-Inference Fun with Seven Blind Mice Day 5-QUICK informal check and constructed response IF you want to use it.

6 Day 1 Observation vs. Inference

7 What’s the Difference? Observation is right there-it is a fact. When we observe something, whether it is observed in person or in text, we are using our senses to know or determine something. An inference is when we make an explanation for the observation. We have to use our background knowledge (schema) plus what the text says when we infer. Every single time we read, we have to make inferences. Often, this is how we dig deeper into the text to figure out what the author wants us to know.

8 You INFER that the coffee is hot.
You OBSERVE steam rising off a cup of coffee. You are using your eyes to observe this. Quick check! The next slide goes into more detail. You INFER that the coffee is hot. You are using your background knowledge (schema) about what steam means to make this inference.

9 Observation Inference
Anchor Chart Idea Observation Inference Observations are like facts. They are indisputable. One can look at the picture and agree about what they see. When making an observation, it is important to be descriptive and specific. Inferences are more like opinions, so they MUST have evidence to be justified. You must use the evidence from what you observe (visually or in text) to make a justified inference. Inference- The kitten is a girl. JUSTIFIED INFERENCE- The kitten is a girl BECAUSE she is wearing a pink collar. Observation- The kitten is wearing a pink collar.

10 Ready to Try? I am going to show you a picture. Spend 3 minutes-NO TALKING-and observe what you see in the picture. Jot it down on paper. Turn and talk with a partner about what you observed. Finally, we will make justified inferences based on our observations.

11 Don’t let kids talk. Have them spend 3 minutes writing down all of their observations-ONLY what can be seen in the picture. Then let them discuss with a partner their observations. Once this time is up, have them make justified inferences. Have them practice using sentence stems such as- I infer_____BECAUSE __________. Their inference has to be backed up by what they see in the picture. Example-I infer it is a party because I see gifts. I infer she is happy because she is smiling. I infer she likes her gift because she is smiling. I infer there are several people because there are several gifts. I infer they are at a café because I see a drink. I infer it is warm because she is wearing shorts. I am sure the kids will have more. This is a quick lesson on how we use what we observe to make inferences.
