9 Review and discussion Get your folders and pencils and gather with your partner at the carpet facing me. Remember, we are preparing for the end of the year assessment. Yesterday, we read about the Erie Canal and worked as a class to answer questions about the passage. Today, you will read another passage about the Erie Canal and work with your partner to answer questions about it. What do you want to keep in mind as you work with your partner today?

10 Good Readers use these charts!
Thinking About My Reading What is happening in my book? Do I understand what I am reading? Do I know what most of the words mean? Is this book interesting and fun to read? Reading Comprehension Strategies Using text features Questioning Recognizing story elements Making inferences Visualizing Analyzing how texts are organized Determining important ideas and supporting details Summarizing Forming opinions and making judgements

11 “Tips for answering questions”
As we complete questions 2-4, remember to review the chart. “Tips for answering questions” Read the directions carefully so that you know how to mark your answers. Read the question carefully – more than once if necessary. Ask yourself: What information is the question asking for? What are the important words? Reread the part that helps you answer the question.

12 Let’s complete question 2 – work with your partner
What details did you and your partner agree on to answer question 2? How did you mark your answers? What did you and your partner do to figure out the answers? Who agrees with them that those answers are correct? Who marked different answers? Why did you choose those answers? Student answer sample: Details that support the statement are “Nevertheless, he convinced the state of New York to spend the money to build the canal” and “Work was started in 1817, the year Clinton was elected governor of New York”

13 Let’s use the same procedure for question 3
What details did you and your partner agree on to answer question 3? How did you mark your answers? What did you and your partner do to figure out the answers? Who agrees with them that those answers are correct? Who marked different answers? Why did you choose those answers? Student sample answers: The correct answers are “Elevation rose by more than 500 feet along the route of the canal” and “In some places, bridges had to be built across the canal”

14 Let’s use the same procedure for question 4
What details did you and your partner agree on to answer question 4? How did you record your answers? What did you and your partner do to figure out the answers? Who agrees with them that those answers are correct? Who marked different answers? Why did you choose those answers? Student sample answer: The answer is “trade and business” and “as a result of the canal, New York City became one of the most important ports in the world.”

15 What did your partner do to take responsibility?
Reflection We will read and discuss one more passage about the Erie Canal and then answer a question about all the passages you have heard this week. Place your materials inside your folders and let’s reflect on our partner work today. What did you do to take responsibility as you worked with your partner today? What did your partner do to take responsibility? Extension on page 24 of manual
