3 Formation of the Earth’s Solar System
Nebular Hypothesis (READ - Do Not Write) Our solar system began as a cloud of dust and gases( Helium and Hydrogen) with heavier elements in the center. The cloud (called a nebula) began to spin and collapse toward the center where heat was generated and formed the sun. Cooling formed large particles which where thrown out and formed planets. Heavier particles formed the inner planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth & Mars Lighter particles formed the outer planets – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune

4 Summary Nebular Hypothesis Solar Nebula made of Hydrogen & Helium gas
Rotating – Collapsed toward the center Heating in the center created the sun Cooling – Rocks formed (particles) – Planets Inner Planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars Outer Planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune

Hierarchy: Arrangement of items above and below The universe is made up of galaxies which are made up of many stars. Some stars have planetary systems similar to our solar system. 7 Kepler’s Law of Planetary Motion
Kepler’s Law is 3 scientific laws explaining orbital motion. Kepler's laws are: The Law of Orbit: The orbit of every planet is an ellipse with the Sun at one of the two foci. The Law of Area: A line joining a planet and the Sun sweeps out equal areas during equal intervals of time. The Law of Period: The square of the orbital period of a planet is directly proportional to the cube of the semi-major axis of its orbit. Video:

8 To understand axial tilt, we employ the right hand rule
To understand axial tilt, we employ the right hand rule. When the fingers of the right hand are curled around in the direction of the planet's rotation, the thumb points in the direction of the north pole.
