SUREC 2017 Cohort One of several goals of the SUREC program is to increase transfer rates of Austin community College geology students to four-year institutions SUREC Evaluation Surveys (URSSA: Undergraduate Research Student Self-Assessment) knowledge tests faculty assessment of student performance & skills; student project records institutional research data Project Details 12 weeks, three-credit-hour course Open to second-year students interested in STEM disciplines Twelve stipend-supported positions Students conduct research at UT Austin, Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering

NSF IUSE GeoPaths: Extra: Geo-Launchpad Collaborative grant between Front Range Community College (FRCC) and UNAVCO Multi-component experience, including 8-week summer internships: interns work with UNAVCO staff Faculty mentor training at UNAVCO - all faculty mentor applicants are invited to participate [2017] FRCC-developed Special Topics Seminar on careers in the geosciences; available in statewide course catalog Pre-REU summer internship includes skills seminar, communications workshop, and career circles Faculty member from each intern’s home institution visits UNAVCO for 2 days and supports intern back at school; Discuss importance of mentoring as well as best practices Website:

GP: EXTRA: PLUGGING THE LEAKY GEOSCIENCE PIPELINE: AN EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAM BRIDGING GEOSCIENCE STUDENTS AT LINN-BENTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY Deron Carter, Linn-Benton Community College Shanaka de Silva, Oregon State University HIGHLIGHTS Focus on at-risk, “budding” geologist Develop a cohort to combat transfer shock Participate in field trips to tie cognates to geoscience practice Work in a collaborative lab setting to access professional networks, build research skills MEASURING SUCCESS Evaluate improvement in student knowledge, skills (grades, rubrics) Evaluate changes in student self-efficacy, peer-to-peer support, feeling part of a professional network (interviews)
