EQ: Compare the governments of Kenya, South Africa, and Sudan.

2 Kenya Type of Government: Presidential Democracy (Republic)
Distribution of Power: Unitary Type of Leadership: President (president is head of state and head of government, prime minister has a secondary role) Legislature: Unicameral National Assembly (Bunge)

3 Kenya Role of Citizen in Voting: Universal suffrage at 18 years of age
Multi-party system but Kenyan African National Union has more power. The KANU has won every election since independence. Personal Freedoms: democracy allows for personal freedoms but do NOT have much say in gov. Decisions made by the President and his Party. Freedoms written in the constitution but the gov’t is dominated by the pres. Granted independence in 1963 from Great Britain

4 South Africa Type of Government: Parliamentary Democracy (Republic)
Distribution of Power: Unitary Type of Leadership: President! (president is both head of state and head of government, there is no prime minister) Legislature: Bicameral Parliament consisting of the National Council of Provinces and the National Assembly

5 South Africa Role of Citizen in voting: universal suffrage at the age of 18 years Multi-party system Personal Freedoms: Many personal freedoms (religion, press, assembly, etc…) and political equality since apartheid ended. Economic equality has not yet been achieved. They have a Constitution and a Bill of Rights Granted independence: 1948 from Great Britain

6 Sudan Type of Government: Presidential Democracy (Democratic Republic)
Distribution of Power: Federal (which means power is shared) Type of Leadership: “President”…al-Bashir is considered to be a DICTATOR Legislature: Bicameral members are elected but the head of government influences who is chosen.

7 Sudan Role of Citizen in voting: universal suffrage at 17 years of age bu-ut elections were held in 2010 and were considered rigged “Multi-party state” but the National Congress Party (Islamic) has the most power Personal Freedoms: very limited, especially those of women. FEW real constitutional freedoms UNLESS you are associated with the National Congress Party. Granted independence: in 1956 from Great Britain
