2 Mission Statement   The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.

3 The Seven Purposes To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship 2. To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education 3. To advance the professional interest and position of women in education

4 4. To initiate, endorse, and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators 5. To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to women educators from other countries 6. To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourage their participation in appropriate programs of action 7. To inform the members of current economic, social, political, and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society.

The Program of Work Committees chaired by your chapter’s First Vice President are your partners in planning program meetings.

9 Personal Growth & Services Including Music and United Nations NGO Begin gatherings with an icebreaker. Develop programs to enrich the personal lives of members. Sponsor the chapter’s service project or charitable activities. Encourage lifelong learning. Icebreakers set a positive atmosphere for member interaction and should be short.

10 PG&S reminds you to include The Arts in your meetings Music adds spark. Music sets the mood Music teaches and inspires Music brings members together. The State Music Chairmen made a CD for each chapter. It was available at the Information Fair.

11 Each year a conference for educators is sponsored and held at the United Nations. At the convention in Grand Rapids there will be a presentation about the U.N. NGO (Non-governmental Organization) Delta Kappa Gamma members are involved with the Committee on Teaching About the United Nations (CTAUN). For more information, please consult their website

12 Icebreakers   Here are just a few activities from the Program Resource Guide that might help to “break the ice” at chapter meetings.

13 Getting to Know You With your partner, do the M&M Speak on the next slide. Randomly mix members up for activities with playing cards.

14 M & M Speak Pass around a bowl of M & M's, and ask each member to take one or two M & M’s. Depending on the colors you chose, discuss two of the following: Red- tell something about family; Yellow- favorite hobbies Blue- favorite thing about DKG; Brown- favorite memory as an educator; Green- favorite flower and animal; Orange- favorite song.

17 Professional Affairs 3 of the 7 Purposes fall under the umbrella of P.A. The Legislation/ U.S. Forum Committee handles the legislative issues for the Professional Affairs Committee.

18 Professionalism Programs, workshops, and leadership development seminars are just a few of the ways the Professional Affairs Committee can promote professionalism. It implies pride in work, commitment to quality, dedication to the interests of peers and a sincere desire to help. A real professional is one who cares.

19 U. S. Forum sponsors a Legislative Seminar in Washington, D. C
U.S. Forum sponsors a Legislative Seminar in Washington, D.C. each year. The Leg/U.S. Forum Committee is charged with initiating, endorsing, supporting, and updating the the state’s membership in regards to desirable legislation that is in the interest of education and of women educators.

20 Plan sessions in which members share their talents with others.
You might consider asking two or three members to do this at each chapter meeting. Not only does everyone learn something new, but also the bonds of “genuine spiritual fellowship” are strengthened. Plan sessions in which members share their talents with others.

Can learn the interests and preferences of chapter members; The opinion poll can consist of program ideas for the following year and ask members to indicate those they were most interested in pursuing.

29 Women In the Arts is now part of P.O.W.
Each October, an Arts retreat is planned at Higgins Lake. Attendees spend time crafting, reading, planning skits, and eating the wonderful food. Women In the Arts is now part of P.O.W.

Having a planning meeting each year helps a chapter achieve success. June provides a good time for a chapter potluck picnic and planning session.

32 Divide the group by committees
Divide the group by committees. Take minutes for the committees and officers to meet and to plan for the year.

33 After all the committees meet proceed with a general meeting to share ideas and get input from the total group.

34 1. Meeting times and places, calendar, distances, seasonal and weather fluctuations, transportation, mobility of members during the year 2. Programs need to be current, meaningful, and enriching to the three generations of women in your chapter. 38 Put people into jobs where they are most likely to meet their own needs as well as those of the organization. Do the little things that show others you value them as individuals. Give the people the information they need to do their job—before they need it.
