1 Chemistry in Everyday Life
Chapter 36

2 Our Energy Needs Most of our energy comes from fossil fuels.
Fossil Fuels – Are the ancient remains of plants and animals. Fossil fuels are all hydrocarbons i.e. they contain hydrogen and carbon

3 Fossil Fuels All fossil fuels produce water vapour and Carbon dioxide when burned. Fossil Fuel + Oxygen = Water + Carbon Dioxide Examples of fossil Fuels are Coal, Oil and natural gas (CH4) Methane.

4 Fossil Fuels Some fossil fuels like coal and oil also contain sulfur compounds these produce sulfur dioxide.

5 Acid Rain Natural rainwater is slightly acidic. This is caused by carbon dioxide which dissolves to form carbonic acid (H2CO3) Sulfur dioxide combines with rainwater to form sulfuric acid, which causes acid rain.

6 Effects of Acid Rain Acid rain kills fish, is harmful to plants and trees and erodes limestone buildings.

7 Plastics Plastics are made from chemicals called monomers which are extracted from crude oil. Plastics are synthetic i.e. Man made. Monomers are reacted together to form long chains called polymers which make plastics.

8 Properties of Plastics
Plastics are: Durable Lightweight Waterproof Don’t decay Easy to clean Easy moulded

9 Properties of Plastics
Plastics are non biodegradable which means they cannot be broken down by living organisms. i.e. Bacteria and Fungi. Plastics stay in the environment a long time and are a cause of pollution.
