2. CNHS Grad Class of 2019! Preparing for Grade 12…
In order to enter grade 12 as a Potential Graduate, you must have at least ‘7’ credits at the end of this school year.
If this is true, you will be a Senior next year and could be part of the
CNHS Grad Class of 2019!

3. What if you won’t have 7 credits?
Summer School is offered for courses that you have taken but have not passed. It runs from June 27 – July 27 at Bliss Carmen Middle School.
Registration forms are available in Guidance. Cost is $300 for one course. Registration is June and June

4. What do you need to know?
In order to graduate in June 2019, you will need to have at least ‘17’ credits, including:
English 11 (2 credits)
English 12
Math 11
Modern History
A Science course
A Fine Arts or Life Role Course
5 Electives at the Grade 12 level
5 Electives at the Grade 11 or 12 level

5. Grad-related things to do in grade 12…
Apply for a social insurance number (if you haven’t already got one)
Pay Grad Fees – usually $70 - $80
Have Cap and Gown Pictures taken for Yearbook and Composite in Fall
Order a Grad Ring, Yearbook, or Grad Hoodie (if you want)

Attend Information Sessions re: Graduation, Scholarships, Student Loans
Firm up your plans for post-graduation: Where am I going?
What do I want to do?
Who should I talk to?

7. Communicate, communicate…
It’s important to communicate next year so that you don’t miss opportunities or have misunderstandings about what is required.
Stay in touch with:
Teachers
Guidance
Employers (or possible employers)
Post-Secondary Advisors (AARAO Tour at CNHS – October 23 am)

8. So, what are your options?
Work
Apprenticeship
College
Canadian Armed Forces
University
(Other options like travel or start your own business, etc…)

9. Work…
Some students choose to work after high school to save money to attend school later or to work permanently.
Youth Employment Fund Program (YEF)
* you aren’t interested in college or university right now
* you create a work plan and an employment councilor sets up
* a place for you to work
* program pays for you to work 26 weeks with the idea that
you are learning skills and will stay on with that employer

10. Canadian Armed Forces…
There are over 100 career opportunities available: part-time & full- time.
These jobs are available coming right out of high school, college or university.
You are fully trained by the Armed Forces and all of the training is equal to college or university training you would get elsewhere.
You are paid while training and /or gaining an education.

11. University or College…
In Canada, colleges and universities can offer very similar sounding programs, but their approach to education is very different.
University -
Focuses on academics and research
Programs usually last 4-5 years
A Bachelor’s Degree takes 4-5 years and is called an undergraduate degree

12. College / University… College –
Focuses on practical experience & teaching of specific skills
Programs usually take about 2 years
Students generally finish with a certificate or diploma
NBCC is an example of a Community College
Oulton, Holland, East Coast Trades are examples of Private Colleges

13. Apprenticeship…
There are 54 Apprenticeship trades in New Brunswick where you work with a certified employer to learn a trade.
Most trades require between hours of apprenticeship.
Two ways to apprentice:
1. Graduate and register as an apprentice. Select a certified
employer and work for a wage to gain the practical experience.

14. Apprenticeship…
2. Go to college, complete your diploma, and then complete the
apprenticeship program.
You can then work towards your Red Seal, which enables you to work anywhere in Canada.
Did you know? Co-Op and Shop classes at CNHS can give you some hours towards an apprenticeship!

Research – spend time online and spend time asking questions
Communicate with your parents

Contact universities and colleges and arrange for campus tours

Review the prerequisites for college and university and BE SURE you are in the proper courses you need next year.
Talk to people in the workforce.
Try to get a summer job and save $$$.
Volunteer when possible and keep track of your volunteer hours.
