2. Today’s scenes: The Balcony Scene and the fight
The following scenes are the most important in the play.
The Balcony Scene is part of the ‘Rising Action’. It gives the REASONS why everything happens in the play.
When asked to discuss a scene in a play, students often choose this one because they can explain who Romeo is, who Juliet is and what the play is about; love.
The fight scene is the ‘Climax’ of the play. It is the RESULT of what the characters have chosen to do.
Students choose to discuss this scene because they can explain the entire story as well. They can talk about Romeo and Juliet’s secret relationship and what the play is about; hate and the family feud.

3. Act 2, Scene 2 Theme: Love
The love between Romeo and Juliet is the central theme of the play. From when they first meet till the end of the play, all they can think about is each other. The intensity and secrecy of their relationship lead to serious problems for both of them.

How does Romeo describe Juliet?
What stands in the way of Romeo and Juliet being together?
Juliet worries about their love being like the moon or like lightning. Examine one of these comparisons and explain it.

5. Act 3, Scene 1 Theme: Hate
Masculine pride is important in this play. To be a man, a person hates and fights. Love is effeminate; something that makes you a woman. This attitude is what kills Mercutio and Tybalt and dooms Romeo.
Answer the following questions (P.Q.E.) to show ‘Hate’ in scene one.
Examine how Mercutio talks to Tybalt and show evidence that he hates Tybalt and wants to fight him.
Explain Romeo’s attitude to Tybalt when they meet? How does Mercutio feel about Romeo’s passive or loving response?
Who is Mercutio angry with before he dies?
What does Romeo believe love or Juliet has done to him? Does he hate Tybalt after Mercutio’s death?
Who hates Romeo for killing Tybalt?
