18 Wilson had devised a 14 point plan that he believed would bring stability to Europe.
There should be no secret treaties between powers  Seas should be free in both peace and war  The barriers to trade between countries such as custom duties should be removed  All countries should reduce their armed forces to the lowest possible levels  The national groups in Europe should, wherever possible, be given their independence.   Russia should be allowed to operate whatever government it wanted and that government should be accepted, supported and welcomed.  Territory Changes: Germany give up land Italian Frontier adjusted Belgium should be evacuated Poland should be given an outlet Defeated nations should not be made to pay for the war League of Nations - An assembly of all nations should be formed to protect world peace in the future.

19 The Fourteen Points v. Treaty of Versailles
Wilson’s Fourteen Points Pts 1-5: Free-Trade, Open Seas, Disarmament…every nation would have to sacrifice and change Points 6-13 = Self-Determination: let nations be free The 14th POINT = Creation of the League of Nations = groups of nations that work together for world peace.

20 The Fourteen Points v. Treaty of Versailles
14pts are REJECTED! = Allied Powers = no way! The Allies think Wilson is being too nice. They Want: 1.) Guilt Clause: Germany to admit that they are completely guilty for everything! 2.) Germany to pay $33 billion in war damages = Reparations 3.) Military broken down and limited 4.) Divide Empires 5.) Created League of Nations This Agreement = Treaty of Versailles

21 TREATY = Divide Empires New Nations: 1.) Poland 2.) Czech Republic
3.) Austria 4.) Hungary 5.) Romania 6.) Yugoslavia 7.) Smaller Bulgaria 8.) Turkey

22 The Fourteen Points v. Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty is brought back to America: USA = REJECTED!! Senate = no way! Senate did not like the League of Nations = too complicated League formed anyway…but without the U.S.
