1 Definitions Pure Substance Mixture
Element is a substance that is made up of only one type of atom. Eg pure gold, hydrogen gas Compound is a substance that is made up of two or more different atoms that are joined together by chemical bonds. Eg pure water Atoms are the simplest form of matter. An atom consists of a single particle of matter Molecules are made up of two or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds. In molecules the atoms can be all the same or they may be different

2 atom of element: molecule of element:

3 atom of compound – no such thing!!!
molecule of compound

4

5 Metals Non-metals Good conductors of heat and electricity Malleable and ductile Lustrious Solid at room temperatures (except for mercury) High densities Lattice structure

6 Transition Metals Soft Metals Only have two of the metals properties Good conductors of heat and electricity 2) Malleable and ductile 3) Iron, Nickel and Cobalt are magnetic Only have two of the metals properties Good conductors of heat and electricity 2) Malleable and ductile

7 Semi-Metals Nobel Gases Have properties of both metals and non-metals Most important for technology, that under special circumstances they can conduct electricity! Inert gases as they have full outer electron shells
