Value refers to the use of light and dark, shade and highlight, in an artwork.

4. Shading
The lines or marks used in art to show variations in light and darkness and to suggest 3D look.

5. Ways to create value and Shading

6. Hatching
Using parallel lines to show value. Lines spread apart show lightness. Lines closer together show darkness.

7. Cross Hatching
Done in two directions, one across the other.

8. Stippling
Using small dots to create value. Note- Dots that are closer together show dark values. Dots that are farther apart show light values.

9. Apply your Knowledge-
Practice the stippling technique on the circle to the right of the cross hatching box. Hint- it should look like the picture on the last slide.

10. Light Source
The values and shadows of a drawn object depend upon the direction and intensity of the light source.

15. Shade the Pumpkins
Use the value/gradient scale at the top of the page and shade the blank value scale below it.
Shade the first two pumpkins on the right to match the left, note the light source.
Shade the bottom row of pumpkins based on a light source that you chose. Make sure you follow the contour (shape) of the parts of the pumpkin and use the value scale.
