Our first impressions of Malvolio are very bad. He insults Feste in front of Olivia by saying “I marvel that your ladyship takes delight in such a barren rascal.” This makes him seem malicious and rude; the audience feel this is a character they should dislike and mistrust. Perhaps Shakespeare wanted us to hate Malvolio here, so we wouldn’t pity him later but laugh at him instead.
