Concept: Compare the Process of Mitosis and Meiosis
TEK B.6E Concept: Compare the Process of Mitosis and Meiosis
3
Meiosis is necessary for sexual reproduction and occurs only in multicellular organisms within the sex organs. Meiosis is cell division that is also known as reduction division because it results in four haploid gamete (sex) cells each genetically different from the parent cell. Through reduction division, each gamete has half of the chromosomes of half the amount of DNA of the parent cell, so that through fertilization of the egg and sperm, the offspring will have a complete set of chromosomes of the proper amount of DNA. Mitosis describes the process by which the nucleus of a cell divides to create two new nuclei, each containing an identical copy of DNA. Mitosis occurs in somatic (body) cells and produces two daughter cells genetically identical to the parent cell and to each other.
