2 A Root? A root is any base word. It has a meaning. For example— The root port means to carry.

3 A Prefix? A prefix is a word part that appears at the beginning of a word. It comes before the root. For example— The prefix ex means out.

4 A Suffix? A suffix is a word part that appears at the end of the word. It shows the word’s part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb). For example, the suffix able means to be able.

5 What Does it Mean? Prefix Root Suffix ex=out or out of port=to carry
able=able to be ex + port + able = exportable exportable=able to be carried out

6 How Does This Help Me? Know One Root, Know Many Words.
For example, if you know that phobia means fear, then you know that any word that ends with phobia is a fear (acrophobia, claustrophobia, hydrophobia, technophobia, etc...) Know A Suffix, Know the Part of Speech. For example, if you know that ful is an adjective suffix, then you know the following words are adjectives (plentiful, fanciful, successful, etc.) Know a Prefix, Know Part of the Definition. For example, if you know that sub means under or below, then …
