Between approx. 300 and 900 A.D., the Maya were responsible for a number of remarkable scientific achievements.
During that time they developed a complex understanding of astronomy as well as figured out how to grow corn, bean, squash, and cassava in some inhospitable places.
They also built elaborate cities without modern technology, how to communicate using one of the world’s first written language systems, and how to measure time with 2 complicated calendar systems.

cassava, corns, beans, and squash.

Mayans didn't arrive in a random area and plant. Mayans spent a lot of time cleaning up the soil so they could plant crops.
Agriculture impacted the Mayans majorly. There population grew. They grew bigger and stronger. This also expanded the life expectancy.
They planted the crops near the Yucatan Peninsula so they could easily get water for the crops.
