1 Lesson 2.2: Water Properties

2 Water Molecule Bonding
Hydrogen Bond: The attraction between water molecules

3 Water Molecule Bonding
Polar- Covalent Bond: occurs when the electrons are not shared equally

4 Water Properties Cohesion: The property of water making it attracted to other water molecules “Sticks” together

5 Water Properties Adhesion: is an attraction between molecules of different substances

6 Water Properties Surface Tension: A property of water causing it to be elastic

7 Water Properties Capillary Action: The movement of water up through small spaces due to the forces from cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension

8 Water Properties Heat Capacity: the large amount of heat (energy) required to raise the temperature of the water by 1°C Water plays a huge role in temperature regulation

9 Water Properties Freezing: water expands when it freezes
Hydrogen bonds become rigid Freezing point = 0°C

10 Water Properties Density: ratio of an object’s mass to its volume (D=M/V) Water is less dense when frozen This is why ice floats The heavier an object, the greater the volume for an object to float

11 pH Scale Acids: Lower on the pH scale (0-6)
Neutral: pH = 7 Bases: Higher on the pH scale (8-14)

12 Buffers Buffers: prevent sharp, sudden changes in pH
They play an important role in maintaining homeostasis in organisms State of equilibrium or stability
