3 CHILD SEXUAL EXPLOITATION
WHAT IS IT? Child Sexual Exploitation is a form of sexual abuse that involves the manipulation and/or coercion of young people under the age of 18 into sexual activity in exchange for things such as money, gifts, accommodation, affection, or status. The child or young person often does not recognise the coercive nature of the relationship and does not see themselves as a victim of exploitation.

Regularly seen in a different car. Being encouraged to be secretive & stay away from family & friends. Dressing inappropriately. 5 mins: Go through & discuss the signs & indicators.

17 Safeguarding is Everyone’s Business: If you are worried about your child or someone you know…

18 Safeguarding and Sexting.

19 Scenario. What would you do?
A parent calls you and says that their child has seen ‘nudes’ of your child. They said that they were sent the image from a mutual friend. Ask for volunteers. Q+A and ascertain the atmosphere. Is there a consensus? If hesitant check to see if anyone is completely at a loss and that is why they have attended the evening.

20 Sexting and the law A young person is breaking the law if they:
take an explicit photo or video of themselves or a friend share an explicit image or video of a child, even if it’s shared between children of the same age possess, download or store an explicit image or video of a child, even if the child gave their permission for it to be created. Sharing explicit images of a child is illegal, even if the person doing it is a child. Discuss. Does this surprise them? What does this mean practically? Jan 2016 the law changed to allow individual cases to be reviewed independently, to avoid criminalisation.

21 Scenario – how would you deal with this at home?
Your child comes home upset and says that they have done something wrong. They finally tell you that they have sent underwear pictures to someone that they fancy. Allow several minutes to think/pair/share. Discuss parental empowerment – working in partnership with school.
