1 Utilizing Critical-Thinking Skills
3.02 RESOURCES:

2 What is Innovation? Something new, such as a new Product, strategy, or process.

3 Types of Innovation...

4 Product Innovation A type of innovation that occurs when a business either creates a or improves a product.

5 Process Innovation A type of innovation that occurs when a business changes how something is done. --JIT (Just-in-Time) --Amazon, CreateSpace This type of innovation focuses on the “process”, in other words, how the product is being delivered or manufactured. The example given to us in class was the JIT (just-in-time) delivery method. Other examples were websites like Amazon and CreateSpace, who use a particular process in the way they do business. Amazon makes its profits by charging commission on all the “drop-shipping” it does for its users. CreateSpace is part of Amazon group that allows writers, filmmakers, musicians and so on to publish their work on the website. They only produce the product if there is a demand and thus manufactures it as the money comes in.

6 Position Innovation A type of innovation that occurs when the purpose of a product is changed. Carhartt Levi Jeans

7 Paradigm Innovation Something new, such as a new product, strategy, or process. Drastic Changes -Henry Ford- Model T “From Horses to Cars” Now this one was tough to understand and it took me a while to really grasp what it really meant. Paradigm innovation is when you change the product or process completely. In order to understand this, the example of Henry Ford was given and as I look at my notes now, I wrote: “from horses to cars”. On the link that was posted on the NVD blog, I found that they talked about the same example given to us in class. It had an interesting quote that reminded me of how important it is to know what people want when creating a product because afterall they are the consumers. When Henry Ford was talking about the development of the Model T motor car, he said: ‘If I asked people what they wanted, they would have asked for a five-legged horse’. In other words, he knew the “wants” of the people and thus he was brave enough to create what I can only describe as a life-saving creation. Paradigm innovation involves what I would call a “drastic change” and today, we have inventors like Henry Ford and Steve Jobs to thank for as they created innovations that have helped the world to evolve. Who will be the next Henry Ford or Steve Jobs? Can there be more paradigm innovations to come or have we invented it all? Those are the questions I ask myself now. On a final note, yesterday’s class was a true eye-opener to a lot of things I have yet to think about and I’m looking forward to the next class to learn more.

8 Invention Vs. Innovation

9 Make Decisions.

10 The difference between….

11 Decision-Making Styles
Minimum Moderate Maximum

12 Decision-Making Process
Pinpoint your objective. Determine what you need to know. Gather the information you need. Select an appropriate decision making style. Establish decision criteria. Identify alternatives. Weigh the pro’s and con’s. Make the decision. Evaluate the decision’s success.

13 Demonstrate Problem-Solving Skills

14 Work, Community, and Your Personal Life
*Build Positive relationships *Accomplish personal and professional goals

15 Process/ Procedure For Problem Solving
Define the Problem State and check your assumptions Collect information Analyze the information Determine possible solutions Select and implement a solution Evaluate the solution
