1 Evaluating Online Courses and the Challenges Associated
Wade Redman Ph.D., MBA, MT(ASCP)DLMCM

2 Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to provide the participants with information related to how the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Health Professions (SHP) developed a formal method of evaluating distance education courses to ensure the quality and rigor of distance education across the SHP. Therefore, courses with delivery method designations of hybrid or online are subject to peer evaluation to demonstrate competence of online instruction.

3 Objective: At the conclusion of the presentation, the participant will be able to describe the unique challenges associated developing a formal policy and creation of a peer-to-peer evaluation rubric to suit the multiple programs associated with the SHP.

4 Methodology: The presenter will outline the Distance Education Course Evaluation process to include:
Development of the Education Technology Committee Developing the Distance Education Course Evaluation Policy Evaluation Process and Schedule Self-Report Rubric for Evaluating Online/Hybrid Courses Future Implications, challenges

5 Question…. How do you evaluate distance education courses within your university/school ensuring the rigor of courses, curriculum, and the quality of instruction?

7 Development of the Education Technology Committee
Educational Technology Committee (ETC) formed Our mission is to ensure School Health Professions’ faculty are provided the technology and support required to develop quality educational products with an emphasis on identifying best practices for online instruction. Members: Program Directors and Chairs of distance education programs, Associate Dean for Admissions & Student Affairs, Assistant Dean of Outcomes, Office of the Dean Director, and Assistant Dean of Educational Technology. 10 S Outcome Review At the end of every semester, ETC Chair sends via all rubrics to Department Chairs and Program Directors. Rubric scores will be reviewed by Department Chairs and/or Program Directors with an action plan developed for scores < 2.

11 Future Implications What do we do with the scores?
Inter rater reliability Collect the good ideas, innovation from all programs and share them! Ensuring all courses all evaluated.. eventually Updating Policy and Rubrics Social Media Policy Open Education Resources (OER) or 3rd Party vendors Accessibility Laws
