Charles (the Hammer) Martel Grandfather Battle of Tours – 732 Led Christian Franks His father, Pepin (the Short) Father Mayor of the Palace for king of the Franks Ran the show Got the Pope to acknowledge that and declare him leader.

2 Charlemagne Charlemagne
King of the Carolingian Empire. Tall Fierce warrior, strong statesman, and pious Christian. Great promoter of learning even though he never learned to read and write himself. Built churches, roads and schools to unite the empire

3 Carolingian Empire The empire of Charlemagne, it came to include most of what is now Western Europe.

4 Missi Dominici Charlemagne set up a great administration to help rule his empire. He wanted his lands to be a “New Rome” The Missi Dominici “messengers of the lord king.” These were two men from each of Charlemagne’s territory that reported to Charlemagne to make sure people were obeying his orders.

5 The Crowning of Charlemagne
Charlemagne helped Pope Leo III put down a revolt in Rome. After, Leo III invited him to attend mass on Christmas Day AD 800. At the Mass Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of the Romans or “Holy Roman Emperor”

9 The French Kingdom After the death of Charlemagne:
Western Empire – became France Heirs fought for the crown Vikings invaded Spanish Muslims attacked No central power The Lords of the Carolingian family were unable to hold the throne and so the Great Lords of France decided to appoint a king.

10 Hugh Capet Count of Paris or the Île de France.
Appointed king by lords Made himself more powerful had the lords elect his son as co-ruler and making the office hereditary. Established the Capetian Dynasty.

11 Philip Augustus (Philip II)
Defeated King John of England Seized English holdings Added more territory to France Before that Philip had fought in the Third Crusade with Richard the Lion Hearted.

12 Philip IV (Philip the Fair)
Fought with the Pope Created a government body which could vote to give him money to fund his struggle. Became the Estates General This body was made up of three parts The First Estate: Church Officials The Second Estate: Nobility The Third Estate: Townspeople

13 The Holy Roman Empire Charlemagne’s Eastern Kingdom = Holy Roman Empire Later Germany broken into divisions known as duchies ruled by dukes. Dukes elected a king, did not have a lot of power.
