BIS is… Rapid Application Development (RAD) Tool (scripting)
Built-in ad-hoc decision support capability Data aggregation and integration Achieves web integration with the BIS Resource Adapter (RA) and Internet Commerce Enabler (ICE) component Available on Unisys and commodity platforms BIS is a complete application development and deployment environment including a database, a graphical user interface (GUI), built-in security, built in integrated recovery, and Web integration tooling. It performs data aggregation and integration. It is designed for both end-user ad-hoc analysis and the rapid development of sophisticated business information applications (transactional applications, decision-support applications, or both). But let’s also look at BIS from a different angle. Yes, it is a RAD tool, and yes it provides for “what if” ad-hoc decision support. But it is much more powerful than that. BIS features data capture, transformation, analysis, reporting and flow and is indeed suitable for the timeliness and pervasive connectivity of real-time business information environments. It offers flexibility with the ICE component for ubiquitous feeds to and from Web, wireless, and other emerging technologies to help protect the value of past and current investments. BIS is a highly adaptive environment, which cost-effectively enables application integration and modernization to fit the business needs of a contemporary service-oriented architecture. It has a large scale adoption by over 1000 worldwide customers using it for business information processing environments on ClearPath servers, ES7000, and commodity severs. And finally, it can be deployed incremental in a phased approach that enables ROI to be delivered and measured throughout the implementation cycle. And to top it off, BIS is available on a number of Unisys proprietary and commodity platforms. 2011 UNITE - BIS BIS Marketing Overview and Status

It provides editors for both BIS script and JavaScript. It also allows Windows to open so that the developer has a view of both input data and results of execution. The debugging feature provides application pauses so that variables and files can be examined on the fly. Using Java with Eclipse as an IDE, is another way to build applications accessing BIS resources. Eclipse does not generate BIS script but does provide tools to help the Java developer view BIS data. The administration is accomplished with a Microsoft MMC that allows administrators with industry knowledge of MMC the ability to manage a BIS site. The heart of the BIS environment is the BIS run time. This is where all BIS applications reside (nothing is stored on the client that can’t easily be downloaded from the BIS server) and are executed. BIS provides access with updating capabilities to a large number of relational databases. In fact, there are very few external resources that BIS can’t access. BIS supports a wide variety of clients/end user interface. Modernization The main reason for leveraging mainframe and mainstream is modernization. Lets take a look at BIS and modernization. Modernization means a lot of things to many people. It could be a simple as populating a drop-down list box with valid selections – or – validating a credit card through an external service – or – exposing a company assets as a service such as product inventory levels or providing an insurance quote.
9
Methods of BIS Modernization
Graphical Environment (PCME) The powerful APIs BIS GUI commands Internet Commerce Enabler component ICE services iceDrill / Component Builder Web Services BIS Resources Adapter (BIS RA) Java/Java EE applications accessing BIS Resources (Service-Oriented Architecture) There are many ways to modernize BIS for OS 2200 applications. The easiest way is to deploy the Graphical Environment – in a previous life this was called PCME or Point-and Click MAPPER Environment. The Graphical Environment provides an easy-to-use framework for retrieving, aggregating, reporting, and grafting data right out of the box – no programming required. The BIS GUI commands provide a way to build Windows point and click applications for both new applications and older character-based green screens applications. In either case, this modernization can be easily accomplished by using the built-in BIS scripting commands or one of the development studios available from our partners: RADS from CIBER and iceStudio from ICS Limited. For both BIS and non-BIS ClearPath clients, the ideal product for Web enabling their ClearPath applications is Internet Commerce Enabler or ICE which is a component of BIS for Windows. It can easily be installed on either the Intel-node of a ClearPath server or a commodity server such as an ES With ICE, support for Web access, mobile computing including wireless devices such as mobile phones and PDAs and Web services are possible. Another component of ICE is iceDrill. iceDrill provides an easy, user driven way to access data through a Web browser. In effect, anyone with a Web browser can access any data on your system via the Internet. Of course, with the proper security levels. The ICE component also provides that ability to expose BIS programs or modules as Web services. The new Java Resource Adapters allows any Java program access to BIS resources – not only reports but also scripts. With the new Java Resource Adapter and Web services, BIS applications and data can be exposed in a Service-Orientate Architecture paving the way for composite applications. In summary, all of these methods provide a means to add value to an existing application without utilizing the rip and replace mentality. 2011 UNITE - BIS BIS Marketing Overview and Status

EOM is able to process input from Unisys ClearPath or Enterprise Servers, IBM Servers , Oracle, Unix/Linux, file servers, other output management systems, Monitor network directories, COM interfaces, .Net API, IMAP, Message Queuing (MSMQ), HTTP, and many more devices using “open protocols”. From that input EOM can generate a wide array of outputs, including: ability to print to any Windows printer or TCP devices, , Fax, create CD/DVDs, send files to external applications, view files electronically, write files to directories, post files to web folders, perform XML transformations, other Output Manager servers, and FTP, HTTP, or ANY operating system using open protocols. A typical customer environment contains numerous types of operating systems, printing devices, and other output resources. Output Manager might be used to drive very large high-speed printers at a central location, post data to a web site, or write to a CD/DVD. It can be installed at a remote branch to allow personnel to view, print, and manage data sent to the branch. Or, it can be used to do all of these things at the same time! EOM is the only output management solution compatible with Unisys and non-Unisys platforms and applications. 2011 UNITE - BIS BIS Marketing Overview and Status

New Features and Capabilities Transfer Jobs using LPR/LPD protocol Directory Alias Enhancement Directory Monitor Enhancement Logging Enhancement Scaling Metafile to page size DDA Charting Utility Secure File Transfer Staging the file in a temporary folder Expand use of Print Attribute’s ‘Output file naming rule Copy File Properties and Export File/Job Management Window 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Extend usage of Directory Alias – The Directory Alias feature provides a way for users to reference directories by use of an alias name. the directory alias name is easier to remember and much shorter than full directory path names. These alias’ may now be used for Backup directory in Backup attributes, Application to start property in Custom Attributes, and Directory Path property in Directory Monitors. Directory Monitor enhancements – Users are now able to monitor multiple files in a directory as well as process zero length files which may contain processing instructions like triggering an . Prior to this release directory monitors we only able to monitor a certain type of file, such as .txt, .pdf, etc. Logging enhancements – EOM is able to log certain activities such as when s have been sent using EOM, or when a job has been printed. This logging feature has been enhanced to provide additional log details such as when a printer needs to be loaded with paper, when a job has been transferred successfully, and when archiving or restoring files has taken place. Scale metafile to page size – Metafiles are used to insert logos, signatures, or partial forms into an electronic form. EOM 9.0 provides the user with the option to automatically scale Metafile to page size and ignore the margins defined on the Hardware tab of the Print Attribute DDA Charting Utility—One of the biggest enhancement to EOM 9.0 is the ability to create charts and graphs. Now in previous releases of EOM it’s worth noting that users were able to create charts and graphs. EOM 9.0 allows users to accomplish the same task in about an eighth of the commands that it took in prior releases, and the charts and graphs look sharper. The chart design feature supports 35 types of charts and graphs such as common area, bar, column, line, pie and point chart types – most of these charts and graphs may be seen in 3D. The chart designer may also be used to further develop customize and save reusable chart templates. Just a quick note, EOM DDA Designer must be purchased in order to take full advantage of these new capabilities. Secure File Transfer—Enables print jobs containing sensitive data to be securely transferred from an MCP server to print servers managed by Enterprise Output Manager (EOM) 9.0, to an EOM print server using Raw TCP, LPR/LPD, and Output Manager protocols. OS 2200 ClearPath Resource Adapters
Java connectors to all OS 2200 resources Application Integration Database Integration OpenDTP RA TIP RA BIS RA JDBC Driver for RDMS DMS RA There are two integration scenarios for business assets; Application integration and database integration. Application integration involves creating a web service wrapper that uses a resource adapter to call a business application, such as an OpenDTP service, TIP/HVTIP transactions, or a BIS script. Not all business applications are ready to be wrapped as a web service and may require some modification, but the goal is to reuse as much code as possible. Database integration involves creating a web service that uses a resource adapter to access business data stored in DMS, RDMS, or BIS. Database integration is used when new business logic is required. OS 2200 includes the following resource adapters: OpenDTP resource adapter, TIP resource adapter, BIS resource adapter, DMS resource adapter, and the JDBC Driver for RDMS. Each of the resource adapters complies with the J2EE Connector Architecture (JCA) 1.5 specification. End User Interface Options
Graphical Interface (MPC) GUI Logon PCMA – add/del security groups ICE Features HTML Consistency User and logging scale-up JavaScript ICE services Improved gateway creation New graphics engine GUI Logon – This feature supports the requirement to force a password to be entered at signon Security Report and Group using PCMA – The Security task menu now has the option to add or delete Security Registration reports. It also has the option to add, modify, and delete Security Group permissions within a Security Registration report. Internet Commerce Enabler Making Virtual Directories This feature enables ICEAdmin to setup new Web gateways for ICE access. It creates a gateway to the user specified directory and ensures that the minimum required files are present. For Windows, this includes a gateway to CISystem (Default.asp and CIErrorHandler-HTML.asp) and establishes the initial Gatetool records to make the operation possible. All maintenance after that can be performed normally. User Management Improvements Integrated ICE user registration with the BIS User Registration drawer. User registration controls ICE Access and determines if a user can change password at ICE logon. These controls are added to the user registration even if ICE is not installed. During the UPGRADE run, permission to access ICE and any restriction from changing passwords are copied from the existing registration (2E3950). For all other user IDs ICE access is not allowed, but passwords can be changed. User registration for large departments can be optimized by marking the department as sorted. Any department with 32,000 users or more is automatically marked as sorted (line 2). Once sorted it is maintained as sorted while using PCMA and ICEAdmin to perform maintenance regardless of the department size. User and department browsing with PCMA or ICEAdmin is no longer restricted to 32,000 users while maintaining large departments. Agenda is no longer supported. 2011 UNITE - BIS BIS Marketing Overview and Status

RADS Toolset Integrated Development Environment Point & Click Wizards Table-Driven Screens & Services Reusable Components Active Data Dictionary All BIS/ICE Platforms Same Toolset for GUI & Web Rapid Application Development S tudio Application Development Tools A major strength of RADS is how it simplifies development. Point-and-click wizards greatly reduce the amount of program coding, which saves both time and money. Application components, like input screens, are stored as tables, rather than run script. These components, plus dozens of built-in services provided by RADS, can be reused throughout an application. The result is far fewer lines of program code than a traditional application. Although the ICE version is new, the RADS tool set has been around for years. It has been used to build many successful applications, including PCME, the Point and Click MAPPER Environment. The RADS tools run on all Business Information Server and Internet Commerce Enabler platforms. Using the same basic tool set, a RADS developer can create both GUI and Web applications. Builds & manages entire Applications, not just scripts or screens

BIS Directions The main reason for leveraging mainframe and mainstream is modernization. Lets take a look at BIS and modernization. Modernization means a lot of things to many people. It could be a simple as populating a drop-down list box with valid selections – or – validating a credit card through an external service – or – exposing a company assets as a service such as product inventory levels or providing an insurance quote.
