2. The American dream
The modern American dream is a national and cultural idea that through freedom everyone can be successful regardless off their class or wealth.

3. The wall street crash of 1929
The wall street stock marked crashed in October this caused the ‘great depression’ which lasted for around 12 years and affected all western civilisations. Many people believe that the main cause of the crash was that more goods were produced than being consumed causing a sudden loss of money.

4. The great depression
The great depression happened as a result of the economic crash. Many people lost their jobs and ended up living in large groups of scrap metal shacks known as hoovervillies. Many families were unable to afford food and shelter. Around 13 million people were made homeless and many migrated to states such as California to find work as farm laboreres.

5. Itinerant farm workers (1930’s America)
During the great depression many people from across America (and the world) to the western coast to work as itinerant farm labourers. They had no voting rights and many were homeless or lived in terrible conditions. Because they had no unions to enforce workers rights they were often exploited and had very low wages.
