1 Question 1 – Feed Forward Support
Study Sources A and B. Why do these two sources disagree? Use details of the sources and your knowledge to explain your answer. (9 marks) This question needs you to show off your knowledge of attitudes to migrants (both during WWII and then in the 1950s). Instead of just comparing what they say, you need to use your knowledge of the period to explain WHY they have such different views – in particular you should also explain how and why their purpose is differing. You could merge both paragraphs and get full marks. One reason they disagree is because of the time they were written… One reason they differ is because they were produced at different times. Source A is from…. This explains its attitude toward migrants because…. Source B is from…. This would show a different attitude because…. Most importantly, they differ in terms of purpose… Most importantly, their purpose differs. Source A is clearly trying to…. because… Whereas, the author of Source B was trying to…… because…. HINTS – Source A is from the 1940s/WWII when Britain needed the help of the colonies/Empire troops. The Government needed to encourage people to accept foreign troops. It predates mass-migration Source B is from the 1950s and follows a period of mass migration after the war. This led to concerns over the numbers of migrants. The post war labour shortage was no longer an issue and by 1958 violence began to erupt.

2 Question 2 – Feed Forward Support
Study Source C. How useful is this source as evidence about immigrants in Britain in the 1960s? Use details of the source and your knowledge to explain your answe This question needs you to make a judgment on how useful the source is as evidence. Instead of just relating what the source says, you need to use your knowledge of the period to explain WHY it is useful. The source is useful as evidence because… In the source we can see… This suggests… At the time… Therefore, this source is useful because… Make a clear statement of the usefulness of the source that is based on linking what the source shows with specific and detailed knowledge on immigration. Perfect answers will consider why it was necessary for this source to be made in the first place. Can this tell us anything about immigrants in Britain? DO NOT simply say it is not useful because it only shows one person, or because it’s ‘biased’. That is too simple and makes little sense. HINTS – Why do you think there needed to be a publicity opportunity showing an immigrant working happily on a bus? What do you know about the experiences of immigrants in Britain that can be linked to what the source is showing (i.e. an immigrant at work)?

3 Question 3 – Feed Forward Support
Study Source D. Why did the newspaper publish this photograph in 1968? Use details of the source and your knowledge to explain your answer. This question needs you to show off your knowledge of Enoch Powell and how attitudes, both positive and negative, were formed). Instead of just comparing what they say, you need to use your knowledge of the period to explain WHY they have such different views – in particular you should also explain how and why their purpose is differing. You could merge both paragraphs and get full marks. Make a clear statement of purpose (in terms of intended impact) of publishing the photograph in this area at this time (eg It was published to change the dockers’ minds about Powell.) They will also make relevant use of specific context about Powell and the situation in this area in 1968 (eg In 1968 April 1968 Powell made a speech warning that immigrants would eventually swamp the white population. London dock workers went on marches to show their support for him.) The newspaper published this in 1968 because… It was published because at the time… HINTS – Published to change the minds of workers/dockers about Powell because in 1968…

4 Question 4 – Feed Forward Support
Study Source E. What is the cartoonist’s message? Use details of the cartoon and your knowledge to explain your answer. This question needs you to show off your knowledge of employment for immigrants in Britain and the impact of legislation which was intended to stop racial discrimination. Examples from both the source and your own knowledge is required, with both supporting a clear assessment of the message of the cartoon. The message of the cartoon is… The source shows… At this time… / From my own knowledge… The cartoonist’s message is that it is not fair that employers are still getting away with racial discrimination. The source shows… This suggests that… In 1968 the Race Relations Act… For example… Therefore, the cartoonist is criticising… HINTS – The cartoon was published in 1972, four years after the 1968 Race Relations Act which had been designed to make discrimination in housing and employment illegal. What is the cartoonist suggesting about the success of the legislation?

5 Question 5 – Feed Forward Support
‘Between 1939 and 1975, immigrants made a valuable contribution to Britain.’ How far do you agree with this interpretation? Use your knowledge of British society 1939–1975 and the sources to explain your answer. (16 marks +3 spag) This question needs to be a ‘balanced’ or 2 sided answer. It must be supported by BOTH examples from your own knowledge and the sources provided (at least 2 source examples and 2 OK examples in each paragraph). You must also reach a conclusion – MOST answers lacked precise examples from OK which limited marks to 8/16 (sources only) or 12/16 (limited OK). On the one hand… I would partly agree with this statement because I know that immigrants did make a positive impact. For example … This is corroborated by source … which also shows… Furthermore I know that … which is supported by source … which says… On the other hand I do not fully agree because immigration also had a negative impact.. For example … which is supported y source … which says … This shows that… I also know that which is shown in source x Overall… NB. SPAG - short answers and/or frequent misspelling limited marks to 1/3 and 2/3 respectively. On the other hand… Conclusion… HINTS – Positive - You could have identified positive contributions from the sources and liked to OK examples like contribution to NHS , textiles industry and culture. Negative - You could have identified negative issues and linked it to examples like Notting Hill Race Rots.
