1 Bell Ringers What do you think would happen in the United States if the government decided to attack unarmed peaceful protesters in Washington D.C.? Imagine that you are a college student in a country where the government was recently overthrown, and the new government has policies that you do not agree with. Your new leader has instructed other students your age and younger to attack people like you that disagree with the new government. What would you do?

2 Vocabulary Mao Zedong: Leader of the Chinese Communist Party
Chiang Kai-shek: Leader of the KMT or Nationalist Party Kuomintang(KMT): The Chinese name for the Nationalist Party Sun Yat-Sen: Founder of the KMT Chinese Communist Party: The leading party in China since 1949 The May Fourth Movement: May 4, Was a demonstration by students who were unhappy with the results of the Vearsailles Peace Conference. Nationalist: Person or persons who advocates for political independence for their country Communist: Person or persons who advocate for a society where everything is owned by the community and not individuals Commune: A group of people living together that share ownership and responsibility Propaganda: Information used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view

Founded as a political party and a revolutionary movement in 1921 The party was founded after the events of the May Fourth Movement Ruling party in China since 1949

12 The May Fourth Movement
More than 3,000 students in Beijing held a mass demonstration They were unhappy with the negotiations of the Versailles Peace Conference Japan was given control of former German occupations in Shandong Province Burned down the house of the Minister of Communications Assaulted China’s minister to Japan

13 Nationalist vs. Communists
Both parties worked together at different points due to their aligned goals and similar philosophies. When Chiang Kai-shek took over leadership of the KMT, he turned on the Communists within the party They were forced to work together against the Japanese during World War II Began fighting again soon after the war ended.

14 The People’s Republic of China
Civil war between the KMT and the Communist party continued from 1946 – 1949 October 1, 1949, Mao declared the creation of the People’s Republic of China Mao was made head of Chinese government Had almost complete control

15 Great Leap Forward Result of the failure of the Soviet model of industrialization in China Profits from agriculture used to buy heavy machinery Population was too big for there to be a surplus Farms were combined into communes where large groups of people farmed together under government supervision The program was a disaster Chinese farmers were unhappy with the government running things and had no motivation to work without land ownership Droughts and floods damaged the food supply Resulted in a famine that killed about 20 million people from 1958 to 1960

16 Cultural Revolution Failure of the Great Leap Forward caused many to lose confidence in Mao’s leadership In response Mao started the Cultural Revolution to weed out all opposition.

20 Tiananmen Square May 1989 Nearly 1 million Chinese, mostly students, gathered to protest for greater democracy For nearly 3 weeks protesters kept up vigils, marched, and chanted June 7, 1989 Chinese troops and security police stormed in and began shooting indiscriminately At least 300 were killed As many as 10,000 were jailed

23 Discussion Questions How would you feel if your family’s home was taken away, and you were forced to live and work in a commune like the farmers in China? How would you feel if the President asked you to go out and destroy all monuments and artwook from before the Civil War? Imagine that you have been involved in a revolution where your leader promised you that things would get better for you and your family. They would be treated better. The government would take care of them. Your side wins the revolution and takes over, but your leader does not make good on his promises. Your family is now worse off than they were before the revolution. How would you react? How would you feel?
