1 Analysis of WGs and Projects
next 2-year plan Partner Feedback on WWRP IP – 2023

2 WWRP Implementation Plan 2016-2023
Booklet 1: Introduction and broader vision – eight years plan Booklet 2: Concrete actions proposed by WGs and projects for each selected activity – 2 year rolling basis Societal Challenges HIGH IMPACT WEATHER WATER URBANIZATION NEW TECHNOLOGIES Action Areas Address Limitations Uncertainty Fully Coupled Applications Verification Attribution Integrated Water Cycle New Observations Precipitation Processes Hydrological Uncertainty Understand Needs Observations & Processes Urban Prediction Advanced Methods Support Facilities Tools New Observations Future GOS Selected Activities For each Action Area the WWRP Working Groups and Projects proposed Selected Activities, which also offer points for collaborations

3 Next 2 year concrete actions
Booklet 2 provides activities that are planned by Projects and Working Groups to help achieving the overall WWRP programmatic goals for each of the four Themes and 18 Action Areas, based on last year’s round of contributions Working groups and projects were now asked to update this information by listing concrete activities along with a time frame

4 Preliminary evaluation of WG /Project Feedback
Feedback received from all WGs and Projects, despite: ETWM, SDS-WAS and SERA. Few info only from DAOS Feedback overall quite comprehensive, covering most of the topics to a good extent Only few suggestions for concrete activities so far in the following action areas: (activities listed in current version of IP 2 versus new feedback provided by the WGs/Projects, not counting missing feedback) AA 7: Water – Integrated water AA 10: Water – Hydrological Uncertainty AA 12: Urbanization – Observations & Processes (chemical aspects) Feedback files from all WG / Projects, as well as compilation of all in one file are available at

5 Preliminary evaluation of WG /Project Feedback
Suggested activities cover Contributions to many ongoing or approaching initiaitives, e.g. NAWDEX, MesoVICT, HIGHWAY, ICE-POP, UPDRAFT Suggestions for workshops on particular topics, or symposia along with major conferences 2017 (Cape Town, EMS, …) Several workshops already held successfully Members attending relevant conferences, are members or contribute to panels etc. Facilitation of data sets and their usage Feedback partly vague, how concrete can/should it be? Some activities “only” covered by workshops. OK for workshop activities, but enough for others? More concrete actions needed?

6 Feedback from partners and donors
Many aspects of the challenges are also faced by other international programmes Working in partnership, combining efforts and exchanging knowledge will be of advantage for all parties involved and will eventually be beneficial for society, the economy and the environment Feedback from partners helps to make proposed WWRP activities relevant for them Important for WWRP IP to also meet interest of donors URBANIZATION HIGH IMPACT WEATHER WATER NEW TECHNOLOGIES

7 How was it organized? An Interaction Toolkit was developed and shared with key partners, which provided An introduction into the WWRP IP and the four challenges Some background information A matrix with all the action areas and some questions to guide the feedback For each of the 18 Action Areas, they were asked to Provide General Comments Point to missing aspects Suggest points for collaborations Suggest actvities for upcoming 2 years Indicate potential overlap with other initatives

8 Who was approached? Consultation with CHy, CBS, WCRP, GAW to identify points of contact Toolkit was send to these points of contact (either directly or through Secretariat) Key Partners: CHy Data Operations and Management CHy Quality Management Framework – Hydrology CHy Hydrological Forecasting and Prediction CHy Water, Climate and Risk Management Intl. Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre UNESCO – Division of Water Sciences, IOC IRDR WCRP Chairs, Directors, Grand Challenges Leaders CBS Vice President CBS Data Processing and Forecasting GAW Aerosols GAW Applications GAW Precipitation Chemistry GAW GURME GAW Reactive Gases ? Donors: ? NSF European Commission Belmont Forum

9 Preliminary evaluation of External Feedback
Overall, perception of WWRP IP was good, as indicated by positive comments on the proposed activities Common interests were identified e.g. in uncertainty and communication about it transition research to operations and implementation joint activities in developing countries, e.g. observations coupled modelling, link to socio-economic models understanding and improving cloud processes and cloud-aerosol interactions data exchange and traceability, new and unconventional observations development of observations, WIGOS 2040 Some identified missing aspects representation of Teleconnections and model fidelity role climate change - anthropogenic influence (e.g. on clouds) data management when it comes to development of future OS Ground water monitoring
