The Six Kingdoms: Chapter 17
2
6 kingdoms outline (write examples of organisms for each)
Prokaryotes: (unicellular) Archaebacteria extremes, oldest Eubacteria everywhere, strong cell walls Eukaryotes Protists moist places, diverse Fungi decomposers, cell wall of______ Plants multicellular, auto-troph, cell wall of _ Animals multicellular, hetero troph, systems, no cell wall
4
Prokaryotes (lack nucleus & organelles & are unicellular)
Archaebacteria: Live in extreme environments (swamps, deep-sea vents, no oxygen) Most ancient kingdom – 3.5 billion years
5
Prokaryotes: Eubacteria: Live in most habitats except extreme ones
Strong cell walls (peptidoglycan) Ex: strep, tetanus
6
Prokaryotes: archaebacteria eubacteria
7
Eukaryotes (contain nucleus and organelles)
Protists: Live in moist environments Mostly unicellular “Junk drawer” kingdom- most diverse Ex: amoeba, sea weed, algae, paramecium
8
Protists
9
Eukaryotes: (contain true nucleus)
Fungi: Mostly multicellular Stationary heterotrophs- (decomposers) obtain nutrients from dead organisms/ wastes Cell wall of chitin Ex: mold, mushrooms, yeast
10
Fungi
11
Eukaryotes: (contain nucleus and organelles)
Plants: Multicellular Stationary autotrophs (obtain nutrients through photosynthesis) Chloroplasts, cell wall of cellulose Tissues and organ systems Ex: ferns, mosses, flowers, trees
12
plants
13
Eukaryotes: (contain nucleus and organelles)
Animals: Multicellular Heterotrophic – (consumers) eat other organisms for food Lack cell walls Complex organ systems (nervous, muscle) Ex. Moth, cheetah, sponge
14
Animals
15
Sponge jellyfish
16
Animalia Arthropods
17
Animalia Mollusks
18
Animalia Amphibians
