3 What is the bureaucracy?
The agencies, offices, departments & employees of the executive branch

4 Getting Hired There are FOUR ways to get a federal job:
Elected (example: President, Congress) Appointed (example: Supreme Court, Cabinet) Enlisted (example: Army, Navy, Marines) Hired Part of the Civil Service System Hired by Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Hired & promoted based on merit (performance) Replaced the Spoils System

7 The Vice President’s Mansion
The Naval Conservatory has been home to the Vice President since The VP has offices in both the West Wing & the Exec. Office Bldg.

8 Who makes up the WH Office
Called “the President’s People.” Do not need Senate approval Vice President Chief of Staff & Top Advisors Press Secretary National Security Advisor WH Counsel Personal Assistants Secret Service detail agents Chefs, florists, custodial staff, etc.

11 Other parts of Bureaucracy
Independent Agencies President cannot fire head NASA, EPA, CIA Regulatory Agencies Have the power to make policies, enforce them, and punish offenders FCC, FTC Government Corporations Expected to be self-supporting like a business FDIC, USPS

12 The Cabinet Are 15 executive depts. Originally only 4.
Newest is the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS), created in 2002. Head of ea. dept. is called a secretary, except the Attorney General heads DOJ. List the function of each!

13 Bureaucracy within the Departments
Based upon the function of each dept., match the agency with the department that supervises it: Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), The Mint, The Border Patrol, Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), The US Army, The Diplomatic Corps, National Park Service, The School Lunch Program, Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Office of Safe & Drug-free Schools, Walter Reed Army Hospital, Office of Electricity Delivery, & The Bureau of the Census.

14 Inner Cabinet Most important departments.
Comprised of 5 depts.: State, DOJ, Treasury, DOD, DHS President meets with these secretaries on a daily basis. All are vital to US security.

15 Outer Cabinet The other 10 depts. make up the outer cabinet.
Oversee areas of importance but not as vital to economy or national security. The pres. does not meet with these secretaries as much.

18 Cabinet Memory Objective: To match the cabinet department with its responsibilities. Procedure: Get in pairs. An odd number may require a trio. Give the names of pair members to Teacher. After all are grouped & recorded, each team will get a chance to turn over 2 cards. If the cards make a match, pick up the cards. Go again. If the cards do not match, turn them back over in their original positions. The team with the most matches at the end of the game wins.

19 Assignment Read through chapter 8, section 1 to complete the graphic organizers for p. 74. Due Monday!
