9 Death of Muhammad Yesterday, you read about Muhammad …
He was a military leader who defeated the armies of Mecca while fighting for Medina. This triumph led to the taking of Mecca as a holy city for Islam and the conversion of most Meccans to Islam. He united the Muslim world under Islam, or dedication to him. He died in 632 AD Muhammad had left no heir and so there was no way to determine a successor. The Muslim people decided to elect a loyal friend of Muhammad – he became the first CALIPH. Caliph literally means successor but it came to mean the successor to Muhammad.

10 Caliphs The first 4 caliphs were all friends of Muhammad & were considered to be “rightly guided” caliphs. Their rule was called a CALIPHATE. - Abu-Baker, Umar, Uthman, Ali Abu-Bakr used military might to control the Muslim world and he created an extremely effective army. They saw military victory as a sign of approval from Allah. By 750 AD, the Muslim Empire stretched 6,000 miles (almost twice the USA)! The Qur’an forbids forced conversion. However, most conquered people converted to Islam. Christians and Jews were given special treatment and allowed to exempt themselves from military service and many held important positions in the Muslim government.

11 Internal Conflict In 656, the murder of Uthman triggered civil war in the Muslim Empire. The Umayyads came to power and set up a hereditary system of succession (no more elections). Focus on wealth and power Moved the capital to Damascus – away from Mecca Division into 3 (these divisions still exist): Shi’a (party of Ali) – resisted the Umayyads – wanted to continue to system of caliphs Sunni (followers of Muhammad) – accepted the rule of the Umayyads Sufi – vow of poverty and spiritual devotion - missionaries

12 Muslim Control Rebel group of Abbasids overthrew the Umayyads in 750.
They moved the capital to Baghdad in southern Iraq. They created a huge BUREAUCRACY. Increased the Empire – pg. 241 Massive increase in trade routes and banking! The Abbasid Empire collapsed in 1258 and the Empire began to be divided into smaller states.
