1 What is a feature Article?

2 Feature Articles… To discuss an issue of interest to the public. It can be of interest some time after it has been written.

3 TYPES OF FEATURE ARTICLES
HUMAN INTEREST – ISSUE BASED. FOCUS ON A PERSON – NELSON MANDELA. CURRENT AFFAIR – POLITICAL. TRAVEL WRITING – FEATURE ON A PLACE OR EVENT.

4 AUDIENCE THE AUDIENCE DETERMINES THE STYLE OF THE FEATURE ARTICLE.
IT DETERMINES THE LANGUAGE USED. THE EXAMPLES SELECTED. THE PHOTOGRAPHS OR VISUALS.

5 PURPOSE INFORM – issue or event more than a news story.
PERSUADE – To present an opinion. INSTRUCT – outline of How To ENTERTAIN – amuse reader, mock a person or situation, gossip style.

6 CONTEXT/PURPOSE CONTEXT
Articles arise from a particular event, an issue that is of interest to society. They may explore a person of interest. They may connect to a historical event, but this is still of significance. Feature articles are topical to ensure they grab the interest of the audience.

7 Feature articles contain..
Eye catching headline Byline – writer’s name or source Interesting opening paragraph Subheading Personal Opinion Comments from others Anecdotes, or little stories

8 More descriptive writing
Emotive and dramatic language Conversational tone Story elements Pictures Use of second person ‘you’, to involve the readers

9 They do not just present the facts
They do not just present the facts. They discuss an issue or an idea that can be developed further through a persuasive argument.

10 They include photos and pictures that entice the reader to START reading the article in the first place. They include a caption under every photo….this further allows the author to manipulate the reader’s ideas on the issues.

11 By making the reader part of the issue (writing in second person POV) you (the reader) are instantly involved in the issue. You feel that you have a responsibility to be a part of the ideas presented.

12 Certain parts of the text are enhanced to influence your reader and “blown up!” They are included in the headings or under the Photos.

14 TECHNIQUES OF PERSUASION AN EXAMPLE
Emotive language The creamy and indulgent taste of chocolate is just what you need to start feeling energetic, vibrant, optimistic and the person you want to be… Expert opinions Psychologist Doctor Susie Smith has done research that proves chocolate eaten in moderation enhances feelings of self worth. Statistics In a study of 200 people, it was found that 90% reported feeling much happier after eating chocolate at least 3 times a week. Photographs Photographs of a group of young attractive people eating chocolate and smiling. Personal recounts / anecdotes Judy Smith recalls feeling lethargic and down before discovering chocolate. She has few friends and didn’t go out. Chocolate has changed her life; she is a sociable and confident woman. Repetition Chocolate is good for you!
