Music is written on a staff of 5 lines and 4 spaces Music notes are oval symbols that are placed on the lines and in the spaces. They represent pitches. If notes appear higher on the staff, the pitch is higher. If notes appear lower on the staff, the pitch is lower. Higher Lower Lower Higher Lower Lower

4 The Treble Clef & the staff
The treble clef, also called the g clef, is used for notes in the higher pitch ranges. Line Notes Space Notes

5 The bass Clef & the staff
The bass clef, also called the f clef, is used for notes in the lower pitch ranges. Line Notes Space Notes

7 Ledger Lines Ledger lines extend the range of the staff when notes are too high or too low to be written on the staff Can be written on the bass and treble clef. Just continue in alphabetical order from a-g

9 Note values Whole Note 4 Beats Dotted-Half Note 3 Beats Half Note
The note value is the duration that you hold the note Stem Notehead Whole Note 4 Beats Dotted-Half Note 3 Beats Half Note 2 Beats Quarter Note 1 Beat

10 Note Values Stems extend downward on the left side when the note appears on or above the 3rd line Stems extend upward on the right side when the note appears below the 3rd line Stems extend to F above and F below

Music is divided into equal parts called measures Measures are divided by bar lines A double bar line is written at the end of a piece of music

12 Rest Values The duration of musical silence is determined by the value of the rest Whole Rest 4 beats in 4/4 time Half Rest 2 beats in 4/4 time Quarter Rest 1 beat in 4/4 time

Time signatures Time signatures appear at the beginning of the music after the clef sign. Beats in a measure Type of note that receives 1 beat

15 Tempo Marks Largo: Very Slow Adagio: Slow
Andante: Moving along (walking speed) Moderato: Moderately Allegro: Quickly, cheerfully Vivace: Lively and fast

16 Ties & Slurs Ties SLurs Joins two notes of the same pitch
No break in sound Smoothly connects two or more notes of different pitches No break in sound
