1 Bellwork Place your draft on your desk.
Review the editing checklist handout you picked up from the table.

2 Parenthetical Citations
The most basic citation includes the author’s last name and the page number from which the information was taken: (Smith 43). If the source does not have page numbers (an Internet or database source), include the author’s last name only or the title of the work: (Smith). OR (“The Study of Physics”). If the source does not have an author, include the first part of the works cited entry, such as the title of the article. You may abbreviate the title, but you must begin with the word by which it is alphabetized on the works cited page. Use more than one word if the abbreviated title matches another source: (“Gun Control”). If you include information from more than one source in a single sentence, list them in the order in which they appear in the sentence, separating them with a semicolon: (Smith 43; “Gun Control”).

3 Parenthetical Citations
If you have two or more sources from the same author, you must also include the titles of the works in the citation: (Smith, “Capital Punishment” 43). (Smith, “The Death Penalty” 158). If your source quotes someone in his or her work, indicate that this is second-hand information by designating that the information was quoted by that author: Ronald Reagan inspired Americans with the words from his inaugural speech that reminded them “to…” (qtd. in Smith 43). **Always attempt to find the original source If you have two or more different authors with the same last name, include their first initial as well: (J. Smith 43).

4 Parenthetical Citations
If you include the source’s name in your sentence, you can eliminate his or her last name in the citation and only include the page number. If you do this for an online source that does not have page numbers, you will not include a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence: Book source: The Surgeon General Joe Smith stated that stem cell research is necessary (43). Online source: The Surgeon General Joe Smith stated that stem cell research is necessary.

5 Second Draft Editing and Revising
Place both your first draft and your second draft on your desk. Complete the sheet from Tuesday if you did not get a chance to finish it (you can do this with the second draft). When the sheet is completed, begin ratiocination of your partner’s paper. For time’s sake, do not do numbers 3,4, and 5. For number 5, just make sure there are no fragments or run-on sentences. We will discuss final reminders later in the period.

6 The Paper Is it 4 to 5 pages in length?
Is it double spaced and in 12 pt. Times font? The margins should be one inch. Delete extra spaces between paragraphs. Check spacing for heading, creative title, and header. Count MLA citations. There should be a minimum of 8 in the body paragraphs. Are the citations at the end of the sentence? Now read the paper and make any necessary corrections.

7 The Outline No heading Single space
Creative title for paper centered at the top Is there a space between the thesis and the title? Is there a space after the thesis? Check spacing – do the Roman numerals all line up? Do the A, B, and C’s all line up? Is the first word listed Introduction? Is the last word listed Conclusion? Are topics listed rather than sentences? Now look over the paper. IS the number of Roman numerals on the outline equal to the number of paragraphs? Read the paper. Make sure that the topic for a Roman numeral is the same topic for the paper. Make any corrections on the paper as well.

8 The Works Cited Page Is there a header at the top?
Does it include the title works cited at the top and centered? Is it double spaced? Are the citations in alphabetical order? And not numbered? Are there five sources? No more than two Internet sites? Does each citation begin flush with the left margin? Are the second and subsequent lines of a citation tabbed five spaces? Now go to the paper and find each MLA citation. Check it off on the works cited page when you find it. The citation should also be the first word or words of the works cited entry and it should be punctuated the same.

9 Order of paper in your folder
Rubric (in front pocket) In the brads: Title page Final outline (single spaced) Final copy of paper Final works cited page Editing checklist with parent signature All rough drafts Peer editing sheet All highlighted printouts and source information in alphabetical order (If they do not fit in the brads, put them in the back pocket.)

10 Final reminders Editing checklist with parent signature
Organize all pages of source material in alphabetical order. Hole punch and organize all papers and place in brads of pocket folder. Place the rubric in the front pocket. Write your name and title of the paper at the top of the folder. Have your folder ready at the beginning of class or your paper will be counted late.
