1 …the major changes in a nutshell
Common core Standards …the major changes in a nutshell

2 Why the common core? National, K-12 standards
Rigorous instruction to build critical thinkers who can compete with peers globally More student-centered classroom experiences Creating students who are college- and/or career-ready upon graduating high school

3 BALANCe TYPES OF TEXT Students should receive a balance of both informational (nonfiction) and literary (fiction) reading materials (text). Most of the literary reading will remain in English / reading classes, and the informational reading will be done in those classes and in other subject areas.

4 Build own knowledge Students should be able to build their own knowledge from the materials they read and interact with. Students should become less dependent on a teacher providing knowledge for them. Students should be able to transfer knowledge they build to all subject areas.

5 Work with Complex text Students should be challenged with reading materials to help build knowledge. Teachers should focus on teaching fewer concepts with more depth. Teachers are encouraged to take a unit-based approach to instruction.

6 Provide TEXT-BASED ANSWERS
Students should read like detectives and write like investigative reporters. Teachers should provide opportunities for inquiry and deep analysis of reading materials. Students should be able to discuss a concept clearly in written and spoken forms using evidence from texts.

7 Write in different styles
Students should write from sources, not just from personal opinions. Writing is shifting from opinions and stories to informational and argumentative styles. Writing should be taught and practiced in all subject areas, not just in English classes.

8 Learn & Use Academic vocabulary
Students should learn complex vocabulary in all subject areas. Students should be able to apply vocabulary learned in one subject to all other subjects.

9 Become Digitally literate
Students should create products with technology not just use products already created. Students should be exposed to many forms of technological devices. Students should use technology for a variety of purposes.
