2. Biography
Shonda Rhimes was born January 12, 1970 in University Park, Illinois. She is the youngest out of her six other siblings. Her father worked in university administration and her mother worked as a college professor. She was always an academic overachiever and proceeded to do so at Dartmouth College where she earned her Bachelor’s in English Literature.

3. AAAAfter grad school, Rhimes sold her very first screenplay
AAAAfter grad school, Rhimes sold her very first screenplay. It was titled Human Seeking Game. However, the movie was never made. This led to her writing her next screenplay, Crossroads, which starred Britney Spears. She also wrote the movie Princess Diaries in Both of these feature films crested a household name for Rhimes and greatly increased her social status in the Hollywood movie writing industry..

4. A bit after 9/11, Shonda Rhimes adopted her first child
A bit after 9/11, Shonda Rhimes adopted her first child. With the spare time on her hands from taking maternity leave, she began to have an idea for a new TV show pilot. This how later turned into what would be Grey’s Anatomy. Her inspiration came from watching old surgical tapes. When the pilot aired in 2005, it received amazing reviews earning Shonda a big role in the TV drama writing business. It also led to the 2007 spin off called Private Practice.

5. Carrying on through further seasons, Grey’s Anatomy began to win many awards including Golden Globe Awards, Emmys, SAG Awards, People’s Choice Awards, NAACP Awards, and more. In 2015 Shonda Rhimes won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series Drama.

6. In 2012, Rhimes adopted her second daughter Emerson Pearl
In 2012, Rhimes adopted her second daughter Emerson Pearl. In the same year, she launched the pilot for her new show Scandal. Rhimes earned much recognition for starring a strong, black female lead in her new TV show. She earned recognition form the NAACP for tackling racial issues in her shows. In 2014, Shonda Rhimes created the show How To Get Away With Murder which became popular amongst many. The show starred Viola Davis whole eventually won an Emmy for the lead actress role after the first season. Viola Davis was the first African American woman to do this.

7. Reflection
Shonda Rhimes has created masterpieces ever since she graduated college. She continues to show representation of minorities and people of different backgrounds all throughout her shows. She also tackles real world problem including discrimination, sexual abuse/ harassment, and more. Her shows continue to thrive, although they have been on air for a while. Shonda Rhimes has made history by using her writing as tool to help African Americans.
