1 Till We Have Faces motif paragraphs
Dos and Don’ts

2 Novel titles are italicized: Till We Have Faces
in-text citation goes after the quote but before the period (just like your research paper) “It’s only sense that one should die for many” (61). quote or novel summary ≠ analysis ask yourself these questions: why does Lewis use this motif? what message is he trying to send? how does this motif add to the novel? etc. This is formal writing: no contractions, personal pronouns, slang, or opinion You MUST use correct MLA format You MUST use AT LEAST two quotes from the text Literary analysis writing is always in present tense

3 Tie your information together; make it all flow - don’t just list a quote and say what it means then arbitrarily move to another quote topic sentence should be SPECIFIC if you’re using the love motif, you must tell me which aspect and between which characters WHY IS THIS NOT AN EXAMPLE?: The Christ figure motif is seen many times throughout the novel. concluding sentence cannot simply be a reiteration of your topic sentence - have I taught you nothing?? Think about what’s acceptable for your constructed response writing Motif development isn’t simply when something occurs once; “development” implies shift, movement, change, growth, etc. Motif development should be addressed throughout the designated chapters, not just one or two

4 Paragraph Prompt 2 Due Date: December 4 Choose one of the motifs above (this can be the same motif from your first paragraph, or you may address a different motif). Analyze the development of this motif in the novel in chapters Develop a topic sentence that establishes a specific focus on the motif you have chosen and immediately answers the question, “How is this motif developed (or how does it continue to be developed) in the text?” Support that idea with a thorough analysis of the evidence presented in the chapters, using two quotes from the text. Expand on the significance of those quotes. Conclude your paragraph with a solid sentence that provides closure. Paragraph responses are completed per the following requirements: o Typed in MLA format o Consistent clarity of ideas; consistent focus on the topic sentence/thesis throughout o Organized in a logical progression o Thoroughly responds to the prompt o Correctly and effectively uses in-text citations o Topic sentence establishes clear purpose and sets tone effectively o Correct use of the English language and sentence structure (spelling, mechanics, punctuation, elevated vocabulary, subject verb agreement, written in present tense, variety of sentences used.) o No factual errors (this applies to research and to novels)
