1 Waves Transmit Information
Digital vs Analog Signals

2 How do we use waves to make our lives better?
Okay...this video is for teachers, but Mr. Anderson is SO cool, that students should watch too!

3

4 But HOW do waves transmit “information”?
Waves propagate...they transfer energy from one place to another. This shows radio waves, but there are other kinds of transmitters and receivers.

5 ***Don’t metion analog or digital yet…
This shows an example of how a transmitter gets some information (the singer’s voice). Also - this shows how we have to CONVERT signals to different forms...

6 ***Don’t mention analog or digital yet…
More examples of signals being sent and received in different forms.

7 What do ANALOG and DIGITAL mean?

8

9 Difference Between Analog and Digital

10 Video #2: Analog vs. Digital
**Don’t panic** Some of what he is going to say sounds really complicated. If you’re into electronics it might be super interesting to you. Don’t worry about all the numbers and acronyms that he throws out...just focus on his explanation of the words ANALOG and DIGITAL.

11 Start at 0:48. You can stop it at 5:26 if you want to avoid the binary stuff.
Start again at 7:00 if you want to see the part about noise in analog signals.

12 Activity: Analog v. Digital Noise
Compare the effects of noise on analog and digital signals.

13 Video #3: A little more about how waves transmit information...
This narrator is going to use a lot of words that you already know. Listen for terms like amplitude, frequency, sound waves, and electromagnetic waves.

14

15 So... By changing the amplitude or the frequency of a wave, the transmitter can send a “code” of ones and zeros that can be read by the receiver. So which is “better”? Analog or Digital?
