Frémont Republican Party First candidate for the party Denounced the Kansas-Nebraska Act and slavery Republicans-the party of North 114 electoral votes Millard Fillmore Former Whig; now part of Know-Nothing Party Opposed immigration and Catholic influence Refused to take a stand on slavery/expansion Only gets 8 electoral votes Effects Buchanan, Dem., won due to his support for popular sovereignty A weak leader in a badly divided nation The Republican party had hopes for the election of 1860 even though they lost this election
