3 John Fremont: Republican candidate who was a national hero for his explorations in the West, had little political experience, and spoke in favor of admitting CA and KS as free states James Buchanan: Democratic candidate who was neutral regarding his position on the KS-NE act. Due to his absence as a minister to Great Britain, he claimed his goal was to maintain the Union Millard Fillmore: American (Know Nothing) party candidate who was president from 1850-53
