1 Divisions of the Brain Hindbrain
Medulla -- controls autonomic function Cerebellum -- fine tunes muscle coordination Pons -- sleep/wake cycles

2

3 Midbrain Reduced in Humans
Reticular System -- the triage system of the brain, decides what deserves attention

4 Forebrain Cerebrum Thalamus--transmits incomming sensory information and limbic system info to higher centers Limbic System --center for drives and primitive emotions Hypothalmus -- controls heat, water balance regulates emotions Amygdala-- emotional response to the environment and stereotypic behavior I.e. fear Hippocampus--emotions and long term memory

5

6

7 Cerebral Cortex Main Processing Center 50 to 100 billion neurons
Cortex is outer layer with cell bodies of neurons Divided into frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal lobes Corpus callosum connects the hemispheres

10 Brain and Mind Right Brain/Left Brain Differences
Studies of Roger Sperry right side of brain non verbal, but better at musical skills, face and pattern recognition, spacial visualization Gender differences Retraining possible

11 Memory Working Memory and Long Term Memory
Working memory may be electrical or chemical Long Term Memory requires permanent synaptic connections.

12 Sensory Receptors Provide the input of information
All receptors act as amplifiers All receptors act as transducers they change chemical, electromagnetic, mechanical energy into a train of action potentials Receptors are tuned to the lower range of stimulus strength Receptors present relative information
