Co-production is about engagement and participation: rebalancing power valuing and respecting the strengths of people

6 Key drivers for more participation
Increasing engagement and participation is: the right thing to do – putting more power into people’s own hands the only way to reconcile rising demand, increasing expectations and diminishing resources a legal requirement

7 Key benefits of participation
drawing on a wider range of knowledge, experience and perspectives improving public service design and delivery building trust in public institutions developing citizens’ skills, confidence and ambition, and enabling more active citizens and communities

8 Christie Commission: public sector reform must aim to empower individuals and communities

9 Changing the Narrative: real opportunities to redefine the relationship between citizen and state

10 Community Empowerment Act:
empower community bodies through the ownership or control of land and buildings, and by strengthening their voices in decisions about public services

11 CEA expectations for community participation and co-production
Community planning partners: work with community bodies understand needs and aspirations are informed by effective participation and co-production in service design and scrutiny embrace co-production principles

12 What makes it work? Sticking to the core principles: respect
appreciation willingness to address power and resource imbalances

13 What are the obstacles? Departing from the core values:
lack of respect lack of appreciation holding on to power and resources

14 How can we overcome them?
Give up some assumptions: that we know best that we’re best placed to deal with it that we need to hold on to our power and resources
