3 STREAMING EXERCISE KEY TERMINOLOGIES
Merit: this determineS how well a student has performed academically over the course of the year. Choice: option made by a student which is dependent on his/her interest and ability. Vacancy: the number of places available in a particular course of study / class.

4 STREAMING EXERCISE activities before actual exercise
Pre-streaming exercise Conducted at the end of semester 1 based on the 1st combined results. Results will give the student a sense of where he/she is currently IN relation to his/her peers. It is a wake up call for students who have not done well. Subject choice survey Conducted SOME TIME IN AUGUST after students have gotten a sense of the different subjects taught in the modular format such as d&T / fce. Allows students to indicate subjects / courses that they prefer TO OFFER IN SEC 3. Gives the school a sense of what subjects / courses that students are interested in. Data obtained will help sharpen the finalised subject combination for 2019. Note that this is not the streaming exercise.

5 STREAMING EXERCISE WHY
Ability of students to perform in certain subjects. Some students may be stronger in mathematics and sciences while others may BE STRONGER IN THE HUMANITIES. Students need to choose subjects / course that is compatible to their ability. Students have different interest. Interest does not always translate to students doing well in a particular subject. It is effort put into the subject that can translated into performance.

6 STREAMING EXERCISE WHAT
Students have different learning abilities and interest. Streaming allows students to select subjects / courses based on their strengths and interest in secondary 3. Students will be allocated subjects / courses based on the principles of merit, choice and vacancy. Merit  based on their overall results Choice  based on the interest of the student Vacancy  subject to class size Students need to meet the minimum requirement before they are able to select a particular subject.

7 STREAMING EXERCISE WHAT
In situations where there is a high demand for a certain course / subject: Vacancies will be filled according to the order of merit. Situations like this arises due to safety reasons. Examples are D&T and F&N WHERE the school has to comply with moe’s safety guidelines of not more that 20 students in a group.

15 STREAMING EXERCISE CONCLUSION
There is a strong need for parents and the school to work together in monitoring the performance of your child / ward throughout the course of the year. TERM 1 PROGRESS REPORT, SEMESTER 1 REPORT, TERM 3 PROGRESS REPORT The Streaming Exercise is based on the Overall Results and not on the End-of- Year Examination results. there is a need for the student to be consistent throughout the year. The Streaming Exercise is based on the principles of merit, choice and vacancy IT is also based on current results and NOT on future results that STUDENTS may be able to achieve if they were to work harder the following year.

16 STREAMING EXERCISE CONCLUSION
Eligibility does not guarantee that the student will be offered the subject. It will also depend on merit and also on vacancy that a particular subject may have. Students who fail to meet the deadline in submission of the choices will be deemed to have decided not to participate in the streaming exercise. These students will be allocated the subjects / course based on their Sec 2 results, again depending on merit, choice and vacancy. They will only be considered after all the other students who have submitted their choices have been allocated classes / subjects.
